About Us: Caritas Rest is a fundraising initiative dedicated to supporting community service among vulnerable people in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. The funds raised through this project are directly allocated to individuals in need within the region. Managed by Caritas SED Galle under the Catholic Diocese of Galle, this property operates as part of a charitable organization registered with the Commission of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Sri Lanka. Caritas SED Galle, established under the Act No 17 of 1983 of the Sri Lankan Parliament, is committed to justice, peace, and human development based on Gospel values and universal solidarity, regardless of religion or ethnicity. As a member of the Caritas Sri Lanka-SEDEC and the Caritas Internationalis network, Caritas SED Galle strives to promote integral human development and build a better world through its social and economic development initiatives.

About the Caritas SED Galle: Caritas SED Galle is the Diocesan Centre for Social and Economic Development of the Catholic Church in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka and is a member of Caritas Sri Lanka which is a member of the Caritas Internationalis which is a network of the Catholic Relief Development and Social Service Organizations working together to build a better world and as such is committed to promote the integral human development of the human person in accordance with the Vision and Mission of Caritas. Its mission in the social field is based on the Gospel values and universal solidarity towards all the members of the society irrespective of religion or ethnicity.

About the neighborhood: Galle: Galle is located in the south of Sri Lanka. A journey to the past sees the remnants of a Dutch past at a World Heritage Site. Galle has been the emporium of foreign trade since the dawn of commerce. The Dutch Fort, which has been declared a World Heritage Site, surrounds the older part of the town and is situated on a headland of which three sides overlook the sea. The ramparts of the Fort are over 2.5 km in circumference and provide a pleasant and interesting walk. The historian Sir Emerson Tennant claimed that Galle was the ancient biblical city of Tarshish. This city is said to have traded with King Solomon, the Persians and the Egyptians. In 1505 a Portuguese fleet led by Lorenzo de Almeida heading for the Maldives drifted accidentally into Galle. On hearing a cock crowing (cock means ”Galo” in Portuguese), it is said that they gave the town its name. Another explanation for the name is from the Sinhala name for rock ‘Gala’, plenty of which are found in the harbor area. Queen of the Holy Rosary Cathedral: The Cathedral of St. Mary, Queen of the Holy Rosary, is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Galle. It is a landmark in the city of Galle, Sri Lanka. The cathedral was built by the Society of Jesus at the end of the 19th century. The first bishop was the Belgian Jesuit Joseph Van Reeth. The Cathedral is central and important to the Catholics of southern Sri Lanka in the Diocese of Galle. The church is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Galle Dutch Fort: The Galle Fort is the largest remaining fortress in Asia constructed by any European imperial powers. Also known as Dutch Fort or Ramparts of Galle, this architectural and archaeological wonder was first built in 1588 by the Portuguese and lavishly rebuilt by the Dutch during the 17th century.
