Located on the Algarve coast, Cabanas de Tavira is a picturesque fishing village that dates back to the 18th century, the date on which the tuna fishing operations began and led to the creation of the first cabins. This village is a perfect place to explore the area on foot.
Take a stroll and sit down to a meal of locally caught seafood and fish at a variety of nearby restaurants.
Dedicated to fishing, Cabanas contributes to the enrichment of local gastronomy, with products such as tuna, razor clams, shellfish and clams. Despite being closely linked to this activity, this village also lives off tourism, being the location in the municipality that receives the most visitors throughout the year.
Today, Cabanas offers all those who visit it a rich natural heritage, through its fauna and flora which, combined with the diverse range of accommodation and restaurants, provides everyone with true moments of well-being and satisfaction.
Cabanas Island is an extensive sandy beach of around 7 kilometers that extends to the Cacela bar, the last eastward bar in the Ria Formosa. The beach has had a blue flag since 1989.
From the long Cabanas waterfront, recently redeveloped, you can see the artisanal fishing boats anchored in the estuary and the outfitting houses. The preferred access to the island is by boat, taking just a few minutes to reach it, as the estuary that separates the island from the mainland is modest.
Once on the beach, the sand invites you to relaxing walks, and by walking a little you can access moments of tranquility and isolation. Returning to Cabanas, visitors can taste oysters and clams collected from nearby farms, as well as fresh grilled fish and various octopus dishes, in the numerous restaurants on the waterfront.
