Better than expected!! Friendly staff. Room is exceptionally clean (which doesn't always happen elsewhere). Love how they utilise what is usually considered small space. Effortless design and loved the iPad-TV connection. And great views! Bed is one of the comfiest I've slept in for a long time, as a seasoned traveller.

Sadly Union Squares gone so downhill, tbh it couldn't get much worse. So many empty shops. This wasn't for first trip to San Francisco, regrettably it will be our last. The change in the last six years is massive. We didn't feel particularly safe there, which wasn't helped by all the signs warning you. Our first night there must have been 100-150 motorbikes and Quads all racing down the Main Street, with loads of the bikes pulling wheelies, this wasn't an official organised event simply a load of bikers took it upon themselves. There was one police car with its lights flashing but nobody taking an ounce of notice.

Close to a lot of nice cafes and shops.
Close to a lot of nice cafes and shops. The staff in the subway are pretty touchy, and you have to get the clipper card to use public transport. The area going away from the wharf is quite seedy, like an open-air opium den with drug users injecting in public. Some of the cafes included taxes of ~$30USD, bringing out breakfast for 2 to $85. Better to ask ahead. Expensive place overall.

We loved the hotel. Reminded us of a European hotel. I would suggest a room away from the street if you’re a light sleeper or bring earplugs. We walked to Fisherman’s Wharf, Pier 39, Russian Hill, Lombard St, Union Square where all the shopping is. It was a really good location. Just don’t recommend waking down Hyde St toward Tenderloin area. We saw a lot of homeless, excrement on the sidewalk, people doing drugs, and all in the morning.
The Handlery Union Square Hotel is an older property, but its excellent location—just one block from the shopping district—makes it a convenient choice. The bed was a bit uncomfortable for me, but the variety of nearby restaurants made up for it. I highly recommend Caffe Central for a good breakfast.
Nice hotel overall. Rooftop for dinner and drinks was nice. You ARE in the tenderloin though not union square. Windows were almost sound proof though. $86 + tax is crazy high, even for the city.
Great location in the heart of San Francisco, with easy access to public transport, Union Square, and Market Street. The hotel offers acceptable facilities for a short stay and budget-friendly.
Great location near theater, cable car lines, and Union Square. Paid parking was in the same block as hotel. Free breakfast was great. Loved the free drinks at happy hour and very nice that our granddaughter was given a Shirley Temple drink.
The location is awesome. The Powell + Bush cable car is right at the corner, which is great way to get to both Fisherman's Wharf and to the Financial District (by transferring at Powell + California). It is also walking distance to Chinatown and Union Square. The staff of the hotel were all terrific. Very pleasant and attentive. And our room (a suite) was both beautiful and comfortable.
The hotel is a small, eccentric boutique hotel, with a quaint, old-fashioned style elevator. It is situated a few streets higher up from Union Square so be prepared for a steep climb up from Market. All said it is readily accessible from the BART with a carry-on. The room and bathroom were great for a long weekend. The staff were very friendly and helpful which always helps.
Good location, very close to Union square. Very clean, with grocery and restaurant downstairs in the hotel, very convenient. They had me stay later on the check out date so I can wait for my flight in the hotel. Many other restaurants around the hotel too. Staff are friendly and helpful.
A great, central, location, near China Town, Union Square, good public transportation, and many good restaurants, and the price was very reasonable for San Francisco.
When I am in The City, just need a place to sleep. Here, the bed was fresh and comfortable and the bathroom was clean. The SF Plaza provided these things well. Anything else is nice, but not essential. They also have a friendly 24 hour front desk which is now lacking in many budget hotels.
A 100 year old family run hotel. Though old it is meticulously maintained. It was spotless. The cleanest hotel I can remember.
Great location on Union Square. It reminded me of a European boutique hotel. Definitely not for those who like ultra modern but is a more an example of old San Francisco with it's genteel class.
