Our cabin at Mandalas (there is only one) was perched on top of a hillside offering unrivalled views of the surrounding cloud forest. Lying in bed in the morning trying to glimpse the distant howler monkeys through enormous windows will be one of our abiding memories of our visit to Panamá.
The cabin is quite small, but ideal for a couple. The bed is not only enormous, but one of the most comfortable we’ve ever slept in. Cooking facilities are limited - check with the owner (Shirlen) what is provided if you’re planning on self-catering. Shower lovely and warm (and enormous).
Shirlen was really friendly, attentive and cared for our every needs. Breakfasts were hearty and tasty, as was the one dinner that we had at the lodge.
The location is remote so it would be best to have your own car, but not essential. As we had no transport Shirlen kindly drove us to the start of various walks, and picked us up later in the day.
There’s a neighbouring hacienda, just 5 minutes walk from Mandalas, that provides lunches and dinner. Don’t expect Michelin star dining, but it’s adequate. There’s also various other restaurants in the community which Shirlen will take you to - they are too far to walk.
If you are reliant on public transport (like us) you will need a taxi driver who knows how to find the lodge - check with Shirlen, she has an excellent contact who is reliable and reasonably priced.
If you are planning on hiking be warned that the paths and roads through the jungle are very steep - Panamanian road builders seem to prefer to take the shortest distance up and down hills, rather than following contours! With the heat these paths are challenging, but persevere the rewards are worth it.
The weather during our visit (in January/February) was often windy, especially at night, and once the cloud ceiling dropped, quite cool and damp, the hint is in the name - cloud forest. When the clouds lifted, or you hike down into a valley, the full force of the tropical sun hits you.
Ideal for nature-lovers looking for a self-sufficient getaway, lodges are fully furnished and self-catered. Usually made of wood and surrounded by forests or mountains, lodges can be part of a group or a single unit. More remote than holiday homes, lodges are popular for safari trips.
