Set in tranquil surroundings with large landscaped grounds and a picturesque garden terrace with mountain views, Tongariro Crossing Lodge offers uniquely spacious rooms with historic character. Tongariro Crossing Lodge was a great place to stay for our family (parents, 2 adult daughters). Our main purpose was to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing the next day. However, after consulting with Louis (owner) and looking at the predicted cloud cover, we opted to delay the hike an extra day Louis kindly suggested alternative shorter hikes/activities near by, which were very enjoyable. Louis had also reserved spots for us on the shuttle (to/from hike) but upon our arrival and discussion, we decided to drive ourselves to the carpark which ended up being a good idea since the day we hiked was extremely cloudy, not clearing up until about 1pm. Driving ourselves allowed us to be flexible and enjoy the stunning views for another hour instead of rushing back to make the 5:30pm shuttle. In addition to the room (ours was newly renovated), you could also pay for a continental breakfast and sack lunch which Louis brought to our room the night before the hike. Very convenient and yummy!! Lodge was also within walking distance of restaurants (two that we ate at had great views of mountains, sunset) and small store. All in all, we really enjoyed our stay - perfect for us :). Louis was also very responsive prior to our trip, answering my many questions.

Located in Ruahine, Mairenui Rural Retreat provides free WiFi, and guests can enjoy a garden, a shared lounge and a terrace. The owners were friendly and personable. We enjoyed their company had a lovely breakfast. The garden and the surroundings were just beautiful. We had a very nice room and we’re comfortable.

Situated in Ohakune in the Manawatu region and Turoa reachable within 23 km, Ruapehu Country Lodge features accommodation with free WiFi, BBQ facilities, a terrace and free private parking. Marie and Bernie were the ultimate hosts. It was a lovely stay.

Plateau Lodge is located 15 minutes’ drive from UNESCO World Heritage listed Tongariro National Park, where guests can enjoy skiing, hiking, cycling and paddling activities. Very comfy bed, good bathrooms, well-equipped kitchen and nice lounge to spend the time during the pouring rain. Also: Tina’s massage was amazing! If you have the chance: go for it.

Located in Bulls in the Manawatu region and Palmerston North Convention Centre reachable within 31 km, Lancewood Lodge provides accommodation with free WiFi, BBQ facilities, a garden and free private... Absolutely fabulous place to stay, close to Restaurants and food outlets but has the quiteness and privacy of being away from the Hussle and Bussle.. our Host was amazing so welcoming and helpful.. certainly will be staying again.. thank you your home is perfect, hospitality tops, garden beautiful and accomodation tops.

Super nice host, comfy beds, full kitchen, right across the street is the pick up of the alpine crossing shuttle. 5min walk to supermarket. Perfect stay.

Located in National Park in the Manawatu region, Pukenui Lodge provides accommodation with free WiFi and free private parking. The lodge offers a sun terrace. We like the bunkrooms great for the kids, and the ensuite is a bonus to have. Four-square and gas station close by. Great service from the owner, very friendly to talk to. Kids enjoyed the family and games room with the tv, ping pong set, and arcade game. Kept the kids busy!! The shared kitchen was great with all the equipment needed. Thank you for a great stay!!!

Offering a terrace and garden view, Tui Glen is set in Raurimu, 21 km from Taranaki Falls and 27 km from Whakapapa. It had everything we needed and it was something different. It felt warm and cosy and had a lot of character .
