Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

I'm a frequent traveler but this hotel exceeded my expectations by all means. In addition, garden in front of the hotel was very relaxing and enjoyable.

United StatesI had a wonderful stay at this lane house in Shanghai! The self-check-in process was incredibly smooth, making arrival hassle-free. The online customer service was exceptionally attentive and always ready to help, which made me feel well taken care of throughout my stay. The room itself had a cozy, home-like atmosphere, with thoughtful details that made it comfortable and inviting. The shared spaces were beautifully designed. The location was another highlight, offering an authentic glimpse into Shanghai’s historic neighborhoods while still being convenient for exploring the city. Staying here gave me a real sense of the local culture, something you wouldn’t get in a typical hotel. Overall, I loved my stay and would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for an authentic and comfortable experience in Shanghai!

ChinaThe location of the room is particularly good, you can find it after a short walk out of the subway entrance, the positioning is more accurate, but pay attention to the navigation of China, Google Maps is not very convenient, it looks inconspicuous outside the alley, and the decoration and facilities are more comfortable and new after entering the room. If you need to clean, you can tell the customer service in advance, and the response is relatively fast, and you can help arrange it Very satisfied, next time I have the opportunity to come back

I was there at end February, actually 5 days ago. The place is easy to find (recommend to use China version of google map). I had no difficulty to locate it. I was early than my scheduled time, after contacting them, I got checked in without any fuss. The common place was tastefully designed. I love the Kitchen and the common area. It has homey feel and I felt like was coming home. I had the Kenya room, it was lovely arranged, clean, spacious, comfortable, cozy and warm. It beats the average hotel rooms one finds in China. I loved the toilet as it was fitted with an electric bidet and sear warmer (lovely especially in the winter). No bath tub (which is super great as I dislike climbing in and out slippery tub). The entire apartment though shared, it is quiet and cozy. Everything is self service, there are concierge or receptionist, but helps are easily to reach and easily available. I had no problem or difficulties in my 4D3N stays here. The place is in an alley, it is a common old alley community (弄堂) (it is exactly the experience I was looking for). The surrounding has many eateries, both local and western. I had the opportunity to buy breakfast (soya drink, 油条&馅饼)from the neighbouring shop, and ate in the common area. I also had a chance to eat at 2 western cafe, sat at the window and watched locals and visitors alike walking by or rushing the work. There also many convenience stores nearby, though those chains operated would need a bit of walking to access. Lots of bars too, but the night scenes is quiet, there are no rowdy disorderly crowds, just folks enjoying quiet relaxing drinks and food in cozy indoor/outdoor setting. There's shopping district and malls near by (at JingAnSi 静安寺). The entire neighbourhood (from which ever metro station you use), its peaceful, quiet and safe (at any hours).

ChinaThere was some white dust falling onto the surfaces from the ceilings, not a big deal to me but if you are allergic to that it would be a problem for you. The Mi TV in my bedroom lacks the Chromecast feature, so you cannot cast from overseas Android phones to the TV. I also tried using an overseas iPhone, it stayed connected but somehow didn't work either. Considering this property is largely booked by international travelers, I hope they can address this issue in the future. (Maybe install some foreign apps like YouTube or Netflix into the TV?) Additionally and It's not their fault, but there is a large group of birds chirping outside the window every morning from around 6 a.m., and it was instantly-wake-you-up level loud. I wish they could provide earplugs.
The spacious living room on the ground floor gives the house a chill vibe. It's really easy to pick up a chat with other guests/host and enjoy some quality time here, host was really friendly. Loved the high-tech toilet. And those coffee pods were top-notch!

SingaporeI love how homely this place was but the staircase was a definite hazard for anyone with knee issues or older age, because you really will face an issue lugging your staircase up and down the stairs. If you stay at level one, I doubt there is any issue, and I do understand that the stairs are a unique feature to Shanghainese architecture but do take that into consideration if you have large luggages.
I like that it is a mixture of East meets West kinda neighborhood which enables one to taste a unique side of Shanghai, embracing the modern and the old, all at the same time. They were a lot of great cafes around the hood and some authentic local delights. The host was generous to prepare lots of necessities which was really helpful and we could wash and dry our laundry.

United StatesThis was hands - down the most satisfying aspect of my China trip! I'm truly smitten with the homestay's decor and its prime location. The bedding is incredibly comfortable, adding to the overall coziness. The staff were also incredibly friendly. Despite my late arrival in Shanghai, they responded to my messages without delay and smoothly guided me through the check - in process. I'm already looking forward to booking this place again on my next visit to Shanghai.

FranceThis is my second time with hills and as usual everything was perfect! The house is clean, the ayi is nice to us. It is located in the old Shanghai compound but very easy to find. I have stayed in several home stays in Shanghai and I normally found the mattress quite uncomfortable, but I slept very well here. I will come back to China next year again and I will come back to hills for sure 😊

I like that it’s in a local neighborhood, but very close to city center too. The house and environment are very comfy and quiet. I like the interior design and the big windows, you can hear birds chirping outside

ItalyThe location is super central and the apartments are in a local Shanghainese house. We were staying at Yunnan room and it was great to have breakfast in the veranda during sunny days. I enjoyed also the common area with kitchen and dining table. Staff very supportive. Good value-price-comfort-location

NetherlandsInitially a little hard to find the place, but I think that was probably due to a lack of experience with Shanghainese infrastructure. The guesthouse host was very quick and responsive, helping me find the correct location.
The place was great, it felt homey and "authentic". The guesthouse staff was very kind and spoke perfect English. The location was amazing. It was a nice and quiet neighbourhood with a lot of nice spots including cafes, good food and scenery such as Jing'an temple & park. The location did not feel "touristy" at all, which I appreciated. But walking a little further and I could experience the rush of the city which was also a nice change of pace. A lot of the great places I wanted to see, experience and go to were easily walkable or bike-able. If some place wasn't, the subway was very close, accessible and easily navigable.

GermanyIn room Ethiopia there are many wardrobes which are filled with the equipments and materials for the hostel. Perhaps it would be more reasonable to make them empty for the guest because no one wants that their stay is equal to a storage room..
100% recommendation for Hills. We lived at room Ethiopia for 4 days and it was great. The whole setting preserved the old Shanghai decos but adjusted to accommodate the needs of the guest, such as AC, toilet, shower room. The bed is very comfy

United KingdomIt wasn't a problem for us, but we met a few customers who struggled a little bit with finding the place, the door number, and their room. Just make sure you got all 3 things covered before you come, also because finding these things on your first day in China may be a bit more challenging than expected. If unsure, make sure to reach out to the owner, she usually responds within minutes (if awake). In regards of what to expect, some pages say the hotel has a gym, but there is none within the premises. On the other hand, we had a great time at a nearby gym called NewMe. Similarly, the rooftop terrace is only for the guests in the Family Room. We also saw some pages mentioning a Jacuzzi bath. It is actually refering to the bathtub that is in 2 of the bedrooms. All in all, nothing bad to say!
We stayed in the family room for 2 months and we loved our stay! This little hotel quickly became our home. We loved the fact that there is a park next to the room, where there is nobody, so it is green, you hear the birds, but no one can peak into the room. Awesome for a break from the buzzing city. The location is great, the Jingan temple is within walking distance, and there are a million restaurants around the corner. It took us a full 2 months to try them all, and by the time we were done, some new ones just opened! The bed was large, the cleaning is done regularly, and the owner was amazing, she helped us on so many accounts, we are so grateful. We also highly appreciated that the cleaning lady was kind enough to help us with our laundry. If you are animal friendly, there is a lovely cat that seems to live on the roof, that we named Maomao and looooves cuddles! You just need to be slow with her the first time. We pet her every day and never had a scratch or a bite.

SingaporeDepending on the time of the year that you visit, the host might not be in. I was looking forward to the coffee concept (which was what drew me to this guesthouse initially), but did not get to experience it this time. Maybe next time! I hope to come back soon!
We got the family room, and especially liked the outdoor terrace, where we enjoyed some lovely meals in the cool weather. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, especially at this price point. We also became really fond of the neighbourhood, and made a point to try out the different street food and specialty coffee offerings nearby.
