There is a big common area with several hammocks. The kitchen is quite well equipped, only the fridge could be a bit cleaner. However, while the dorms are quite small, they were very clean and sheets get changed regularly. Breakfast is very good. Its a short walk to the main streets. Generally, very relaxed atmosphere and easy to socialize. It is very basic, but for the price I can recommend staying here.

While we were there, it was rainy-ish season, so our room was very humid. This is of course not the hostels fault at all, since it’s a climate issue, but it is good to keep in mind

The hostel has a lot of chill places, multiple hammocks/tables/chairs where you can hang out with others. The kitchen is also really well equipped and spacious, making it very convenient to cook meals for yourself! While the location is slightly further out of town, since Puerto Viejo is not so big anyways, you’re very quickly at the beach or in the ‘town center’ anyways!! They also have two very sweet and cuddly cats!! Overall it is a really relaxed place to be, no need to worry or stress about anything

The bathroom wasn’t really clean. I know it has a lot to do with the other travelers, but maybe it should be cleaned a bit more often then?

The outdoor spaces are very nice! Big tables make it easy to meet to other travelers. The big kitchen is well equipped and it’s very nice to have breakfast included.

The bikes cpuld be a a bit more well treated and the breakfast being the same everyday (pinto, banana and bread) gets repetitive fast

Its a cozy hostel with nice hammocks and cutie cats. They got a lot of lockers, the bathrooms have where to hang clothes. its good value for the money. Wifi wprks nice

We booked a private room and when we arrived our room was private but in a room which wasn’t well explained when booking. When we arrived there was no running water for the shower or the toilets, this was resolved quickly though. There was also a random dirty towel which was left in our room when we arrived.

The location was quite good and the staff were friendly. The breakfast included was very nice and surprisingly it wasn’t very loud here which was great.

They don't accept cash for payment and the exchange rate used was at least 600 colones off the rates given on Google and two other major conversion websites. The toilet roll holder kept falling off the wall and bedding was ripped. The hostel could use a bit of a refresh in general. Bedrooms cramped. WiFi during the day went on and off so I had to go elsewhere to make a call.

Well resourced kitchen, hostel away from the bustle of town but still easy to walk to, genuine and friendly staff, bikes and items to rent, drinking water provided. coffee, egg, rice and banana for breakfast. Your basic needs will be met staying here and it isn't dirty or uncomfortable.

We stayed in a double room with shared bathroom and we liked the warm welcome and all the useful tips for our trip from Yiannis and team, as well as the delicious breakfast and coffee that was offered every morning! Location is also good, surrounded by nature and not at all loud during night. Loved the music selection in the communal area. Warm water was always available and daily cleaning in the bathroom was really appreciated.

The facilities are old and rusty sometimes. The cats come too close during the meal times. The accommodation in Puerto Viejo is generally expensive

The location is good, close to the centre while is quiet at night (after the music is off during the quiet hour at 2300). The breakfast is full. The boss and staff are nice and friendly.

This hostel is great for the price! Kind of tucked away from town but still close enough about a 5 min walk to main road. Included breakfast was always good and great way to start my day. Staff was very friendly and welcoming, made you feel at home. Always helped with recommendations and any questions I had, very accommodating to needs as well. Would stay again!

Kalunai Hostel has a great location within Puerto Viejo and a big common area/ kitchen for people to gather. The staff is really friendly and helpful. A traditional Costa Rican breakfast is served each morning.
