it is fairly high up, not an easy walk, and there are some ants and other animals around (as can be expected in the middle of the jungle)

not having facilities to make tea or coffee so you will need to bring your own drinks and snacks as the only food is at breakfast

Before I arrived communication with Bryan was fantastic, booking tours and shuttle from the airport. As all reviews say it’s a very steep hill to get up to the property but it’s absolutely worth it for the views! and you have free entry to the waterfalls when staying here as they are only 10mins trek away. Greeted by an Iguana and a family of Coati’s and bid farewell by a group of white faced monkeys, I absolutely fell in love with Montezuma and a big part of that was staying here and Sunshine Sanctuary. perfect for peace and being surrounded by the jungle and a short walk to a stunning beach and town. Bryan was helpful throughout and the rooms are huge, clean and with the biggest most comfortable beds! breakfast was delicious

Breakfast was just ok and the pool not very inviting. You could hear your neighbours very clearly through the walls

Loved the waterfall access and went several times. Amazing view, we saw whales from the balcony even. We enjoyed the bridge walk into town and it was clean and comfortable

Mattress was uncomfortably firm for my taste. Only one key to the door was available and it had to be used to lock the door from the inside instead of a knob for a deadbolt. This felt a bit unsafe in the case of needing a fast exit in the event of an emergency. The walk to town was short but on a very steep, narrow road with no shoulder.

Unique. Entry was by way of suspension bridge and it was perched high on the hill above the jungle canopy. We saw monkeys as soon as we got there. there’s a great private trail to the waterfall. Friendly and very helpful staff. The floors shone they were so clean.

You have to go to town for lunch or dinner but there are good options close. We ate at Chicos both evenings just because the view and atmosphere was amazing. For lunch, Soda de Naranja had great food at a great price. Don't be a hero. Pay the 3000 or 4000 colones for a ride up the hill.

The bridge is awesome. Fun to walk in that way, but stairs will await you and your luggage on the other side. There is a top road that is a flatter walk and then you can carry your luggage down to your room. We went that way during dark hours. We didn't see much staff, but the ones we saw were pleasant. Breakfast was a basic meal, but it was authentic and the cook was very pleasant. They have a nice eating area with a great view. We didn't run into the wildlife like we expected from reviews, until the last morning when there was a White faced Capuchin trying to get into our room from the balcony. Our balcony door didn't lock, so obviously it wasn't his first rodeo. So keep your stuff off of the balcony, and a simple hair tie can help dissuade them from getting into your room. Beautiful beaches nearby. There is a trail nearby to go to the top of the falls. Signs say the path belong to a Zipline company and we're private and you had to pay to use them. We saw an employee but he didn't charge us. Afterwards, follow the creek bed down to the bottom. This is a tough hike. Hiking boots or keen type shoes would be best.

We couldn’t access the waterfall from the hotel as there was no rope to reach the other bank Ask well how to do it or don’t just follow the signs as the path is not always manned!

Property description should include a warning to guests with low clearance cars: the road to the hotel is a bumpy dirt road, you will likely have to park at the hanging bridge entrance. Photos are slightly misleading as to the state of the property. Huge hill to walk up/down if walking to town.

Great views, pool, TV with streaming capabilities, wildlife nearby (monkeys), free waterfall trail access, close to town, kind staff, free breakfast.

We absolutely loved the view! There were monkeys and raccoons right by us and the hotels own hanging bridge was a great short cut into town (10min walk). Also the waterfall is so much closer and when you're staying at the accommodation, you don't have to pay for the waterfall.

Road can be tricky when it rains a lot, but skilful driver would manage, like mine did, without 4 W dirve.

This is an amazig place with beautiful view. Brian, the owner, was waiting for us when we arrived and explained everything to us. He even called local sushi restaurant for us and had our dinner delivered to our room, which was great. Room was specious, extremely comfortable beds and we slept very well. The next morning Brian helped us organized private boat trip to Tortuga Island with his friend Andre and Josua and that was brilliant. We caught some nice fish, did some snorkeling, saw many dolphins on the way and enjoyed the tortuga island. We would love to come again.

Breakfast was a bit bland. There were a lot of renovations going on around the pool which made for a noisy setting. We opted not to use the pool because we would have been surrounded by construction workers. The room had an amazing view but it felt old. The location may be great for young fit travellers but it is a bit of a hike without a car. Keep that in mind.

No food options once breakfast is done, as there is no restaurant within reasonable (hill-less) walking distance. Have a car or quad on-hand for the 90 degree hill leading back to Montezuma town.. Otherwise, you will be hiking it and it is difficult, especially with a full stomach. As this lovely property flanks the waterfall, the din of falling water after a heavy rain, during sleep hours, may require ear plugs for the light sleeper.

Air conditioning!! The quality materials (i.e. flooring), jungle setting, superior view, proximity to waterfall, hot shower and good water pressure for toilet flushing.

Sunshine Sanctuary is in a beautiful location and has the potential to be a 4 star property. However, my experience found it to be slightly run down and not up to the expectations of a serene stay. There is currently construction going on in the hotel. I was not warned of this and had booked a night here to be my quiet relaxing time in between staying in busier hostels. I looked forward to enjoying the jungle environment and spotting some animals, however I was met with the sounds of drills and welding during the day. If I had been warned I would have been more understanding. I would have appreciated a discount but was not offered one. I also did not see any animals which I think could have been from the house. Some of the pillows on the bed were stained or torn. I also had several ants in my room. The property is in the trees so this wasn’t surprising, but be careful not to have any food in your bag. There was no yoga while I was there, this place kind of felt “empty”. It could have a strong soul and vibe and it felt like a bit of a shell.

The staff were friendly and helped me arrange a shuttle (although the shuttle company went to the wrong pickup location and almost left me behind despite staff confirming the location x2). And the breakfast in the morning was typical Costa Rican plate style which was also quite good. There were enough towels in my room and the decor was fitting. The pool area was very scenic and the staff allowed me to use the pool after checkout while I waited for my shuttle. The proximity the waterfall is wonderful and you can walk down the trail for free. The views from the location on the cliff are also lovely. The hanging bridge is cool to go on, but don’t expect to be able to use it if you arrive to the hotel on foot as they keep the entrance by the road locked. The shuttle I used would only drop me off at the base of the main road, and it was a very steep climb up the hill. I was able to do it but I do have moderate fitness and had backpacks and not rolling luggage. This is also not proper to stay in if you have accessibility issues as there is nothing but stairs to get to any of the rooms. Not a problem for me but would be for some

The hotel was a bit of a construction site whilst I was there. The pool wasn’t usable and there was constant drilling in the mornings. The bathroom was quite dirty and the mesh nets were ripped which meant quite a few insects were able to get into the room. The hotel is on top of a VERY steep hill. I think I underestimated just how much of a mission it was to get back to the hotel each evening .

The view was stunning. The beds were comfortable and Anastasia was exceptionally accommodating and kind. Her warmth, delicious breakfasts in the mornings and tips on Montezuma were a highlight. LOVED the hanging bridge - what an experience!

It wasn't that clean and smelled moldy. Also the bridge to walk down to Monetezuma was beautiful and such a great idea but my key didn't work in the locked gate. I walked all the way back to hotel and staff let me out and sprayed lock with wd40. On the way back if on foot the intense incline is difficult. I made it to the bridge so grateful but when my key didn't work again I had to hike the mountain in the dark back to the tucked away hotel. So while the bridge is picturesque ans a great way to short cut to the town if the gate won't open its useless. The pool was nice for a plunge but very small. I would describe it as quaint.

Great location overlooking the pacific. The room was spacious and a nice balcony.

Rooms are quite outdated compared to the photos online, was definitely expecting more modern finishings for the price. Pool was very small and busy with families during our stay. Room had a resident gecko, many small ants and a massive spider got in our room one night due to a very large gap between the door and frame.

Lovely setting overlooking the ocean with the chance to spot birds and wildlife right from the balcony. Nice breakfast included each morning served by lovely staff with yoga offered on site one of the days we stayed. Air conditioning worked well and a water jug was left in the fridge with two glasses which was very welcome when we arrived!

First of all, the room was quite large and the view from the balcony is very nice. The breakfast was really good and we saw monkeys all day long. But we didn’t like a few things. First of all, for people with no car it is a very very steep way up to the hotel. Fortunately someone picked us up to the hotel. The hanging bridge can only be used with the room keys, so you can’t use it to enter the hotel for the first time. We thought the stay would be very relaxing and doing yoga in the morning, instead there was a construction site beside our room, which starts at 7am…not relaxing at all in our holidays. The bed in our room was very comfy and clean but in the bathroom there were many foreign hair and spiders (small ones). We had a little coffee machine in our room, which was nice, badly the glasses and cups were used and not clean.

I don't like to say negative things but there are a few things this hotel could do to improve their offering. For the price point we were expecting much a better hotel than we got. Bearing in mind we are traveling around central America and have stayed in various types of accomodation and we are not fussy people at all. However for the price the hotel is quite dated and there are general maintenance items they could fix, paint, clean, redo. If you are aware of this before you stay then you won't be disappointed but the photos are not up to date. There is no reception really, you show up and are not greeted by anyone until we found the cleaner (who doesn't speak any English at all which is fine because we used our basic Spanish and Google translate.) The breakfast alternates offering different things each day which is good. We didn't get to try it all but I'm sure it was fine. The pool is very uninviting and could be improved. The pillows had black mould on them (it's the jungle so granted things don't dry properly). The toilet seat was broken and coming off. The table under the TV was fraying at the edges. Tiles broken on the stairs. Needs repainting. Overall the property needs some TLC and the "hotel" element needs improving because other than the cleaner there is no one around all day to give you information on what to do/ help or anything. You can message on booking.com and they do reply quite quickly but this isn't helpful if you don't have access to data outside of the hotel and need information fast. The landscaping needs attention. The reception could be improved. It's a long walk up a very steep steep road from Montezuma. Climbing this for the able bodied person is fine, hard but fine. For someone who has any difficulties walking or balancing they will struggle walking to this hotel. Water provision is not much but I think you can drink the tap water.

The beds are super comfy!! balcony over looking the ocean was really lovely.
