When we arrived the room was freezing and we couldn't turn the radiator up. But I called the guy and he came out quite quickly. He found that the heating had been shut down as no one had been staying. Luckily we were going out because when we got back the room had started to warm up but was still chilly, even with 2 electric heaters on as well as the radiator. I understand thst heating is expensive if no one is using the rooms but I feel that the room should have been checked and the heating turned on in the morning of our arrival. So that it was warm when we arrived after travelling 200 miles from Somerset. We didn't appreciate having to drink a well needed cuppa in our coats.

We used the Captain Howey as we were going on the RHDR for their valentines dinner. So it was the perfect location.

We were given a front door key and told we could go and come at will. However door to restaurant and exit was locked over night (to almost 9am in the morning) so without using the car park/emergency external exit we were to all intents and purposes locked in. I would have thought for health and safety and fire this door should NEVER be locked.

Breakfast was excellent but did not start serving breakfast until 9.00am. Could have been a little late for meeting had chef and staff not pulled the stops out for us.

I was not made aware that the hotel was run separately to the pub. On arrival I was given a card to call the reception, it was the wrong card. I then called again and was told which room I was in. I’d made the hotel aware that I needed early check in beforehand. The door handle itself wasn’t securely attached to the door which made it trickier to open. The kettle plug did not work unless you pushed it in. On leaving we had to exit via a steep metal external staircase while carrying bags as the pub door was not yet open. This was at 9.30. Would not recommend for anyone unsteady on their feet.

The room was a good size and the bed comfortable

The bar and restaurant are not run by the hotel. Access to the rooms when the bar and restaurant are closed is from the rear fire escape.

Room was very basic. Communal stairs needed a good hoover. Dirt noticed on arrival still there 3 days later when we left. Breakfast not available until 9am - we were on our way out for the day by then. Disappointed no reference to Captain Howey - namesake of hotel.

Excellent location for RHDR - our main reason for visiting. Beds made up and towels changed each day. Plenty tea, coffee & milk available + biscuits each day Excellent food in restaurant Free wi-fi - good connection

Room 8 has a sloping roof, and sitting down is essential to go to the toilet! An architectural feature of an old hotel!

Close to RHDR and good bus links (until 1800) along the coast. Pleasant lounge for evenings. All the staff I spoke to were pleasant and the room was clean and well serviced. Timings meant I didn’t have their breakfast, which in the past have been well worth taking.

Room was very warm with no air conditioning or fan (to be fair, weather was particularly hot). Whilst the bar wasn't too loud, the street outside the window was noisy with traffic from early in the morning which made sleeping with the window open because of the heat a bit annoying.

Easy spot to stay in for our needs. Room was comfortable enough. Bar downstairs was reasonably quiet, with friendly staff, and served affordable food. Parking was easy and convenient. Overall a decent enough stay

We don’t have anything negative to say.

The location was just right for our needs. The room was clean and well presented. Probably could have done with a couple more tea bags, but that was just me. Check in and out was very simple.

Access to the room late at night. The lock on the outer door (fire escape stairway) did not work, the owner had to talk us through trying to get it to open. It needs some attention. Probably just stiff from lack of use and poor weather
