Breakfast service finished at 9.30 prompt on the Sunday which was a little early for us and we felt rather rushed.

Lovely room. We apppreciated the homemade shortbread and the guitar player in the lounge very much.

The moth infestation in her room, room 4. The ‘dodgy’ electrics with extension cables having out of date PAT tests; her complaints were completely dismissed hence my intervention. The limited dinner menu was the final straw hence we checked out and went elsewhere.

Went there knowing it was going to be a nice weekend. We went the previous year and had breakfast outside, it was lovely. This year we weren’t allowed, except for coffee!! A bit ridiculous considering the low number of guests staying at the hotel. The receptionist was like a robot and didn’t make us feel welcome. Restaurant wasn’t open in the evening and the pub down the road served dreadful food.

Location is perfect and the hotel is lovely.

The duvet was far too hot for the time of year. We didn’t sleep well despite the bed being very comfy it was just far too hot! The air con kept cutting in and waking me up. I think I should have opened the window instead. Could have done with a little music in the bar as we were in there by ourselves and it seemed very quiet!

The breakfast was great. Plus you had oat milk as I’m off dairy atm. Loved all the historical paintings and antique furniture. It was a fascinating hotel and the communal areas were lovely. The lady who was working at breakfast was delightful as we spoke about the Isles of Scilly where we and she frequent! The lady on reception in the evening called about 4 taxi firms for us so that we could get to Beeley for some supper as it was the night the peacock wasn’t serving food. The receptionist this morning gave us a route to follow for a good walk which we thoroughly enjoyed and took us most of the day from Beeley to Chatsworth in a circular route.

Bedroom with gap between bathroom and bed felt too tight and not relaxing. Visiting in March and having log burners at home - it felt a bit depressing on a grey wet night in a sitting room with a fireplace but no fire. Apparently the fire doesn’t work well so they don’t light it. I suggested spending some money and putting a liner up as this is something that comes up in the reviews. The bar area whilst having a fire is not comfortable - only a couple of soft chairs mainly benches and hard chairs. A small country hotel needs comfy chairs and a fire.

On arrival the receptionist was very curt and unresponsive. Did not meet and greet in a friendly or courteous manner.

Breakfast finished serving abruptly at 9.30am on a Saturday morning. We had to have a tray in our room and it was a measly offering given the room rate we paid

Breakfast. The staff apologised for being busy. All orders were running late. They only had the hotel guests to deal with. Our kippers arrived after an hour and weren't cooked. We left and complained to reception. We were refunded £28. The room cost £320 for the night. With this level of service - it's daylight robbery.

This is the first time I've stayed at a hotel which seems to be run for the staff rather then the guests. A novel experience I hope not to repeat. The small bar has an arcane drinks ordering system. The barman asks what you'd like, says 'take a seat' and then mixes your drink. He then chats with other staff members until they've dealt with their social calendars/interpersonal relationships/world economic affairs. Then yet another staff member brings the drink. All in one small room. A really dire form of performative nonsense.
