Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.

The largest dorm room is really very large and cramped, with so many beds and little space.
I love the bar and restaurant area, great atmosphere! The staff is super nice, patient and helpful. They have long shifts and are always helpful, I was really impressed.

very noisy in the first night because of a party with loud music. But you get ear plugs at the reception :)

Needs better airflow in restrooms and large dorm. Kinda musty/stale. Also, restrooms were pretty dark and difficult to see.

It is inconvenient to charge the phones. I recommand to add sockets beside each bed.
The location is in the city center, just 1.3 km away from the bus terminal, also near the coast. Lots of reataurant nearby. All tours will pick up you in front of this hostel. The facilities in the room is not quite new. But you can make new friends here! People leave some food or drinks in the kitchen for free.

I would have welcomed a towel. An elevator instead of three sets of stairs would have been an asset, especially for those carrying a parka from a Greenland expedition, a backpack and a carry-on when leaving at a very early morning. Not as central as my previous hostel but within walking distance of downtown. A counter which was not sticky when eating at the bar.
I left at 6:30 a.m. so had no breakfast. At reception the bilingual Frenchman was exceptionally helpful and carried my bags to my dorm/ bed. The daily pizza I ordered the evening I arrived was delicious and the wine was very good as well. Guests and staff were friendly and from all over the world. I could conveniently book and pay for my airport pick-up at the hostel for the next morning through the gentleman who had handled my welcome.

The attitude of the male behind the bar on my last morning/lunch. Really bad. But the cleaner guy let me stay in the old gym at the end to watch the queen's funeral

Nothing. I mean, it's a hostel and I was staying in a 6 people dorm… there are more comfortable options, but Iceland is expensive, so…
Nice atmosphere, great location and good value for a hostel. They also host concerts and other events. Had a good breakfast (not included, but relatively cheap).

The locker was broken, so, I couldn't secure my stuff properly. The receptionist proposed to place my things in the storage room instead (thanks for finding a solution!) Also, the floor in the washrooms is extremely cold (and sometimes a bit nasty) - don't forget your flip-flops :)
A 6-bed room is pretty convenient to live in. A towel is provided for free if you request it. Plenty of washrooms, so, I've never run into an issue of waiting for it. Great experience overall!

...unfortunately the sleeping room was not very quiet in the night due to a few other guests, even though the most people tried to be quiet
The Kex Hostel has a great design and interior. The 42 bed sleeping room was definitely a unique experience...

I think that there could have been activities at the hostel to encourage guest engagements even something like karaoke quiz etc
I like the hostels quirky and that's the main reason I chose it.

Might be a European thing, but there were communal showers! Of course, private showers were also available, but certainly those were often in use.
The 42 bed room was actually really comfortable, clean and easy to sleep in. I enjoyed the downstairs communal area/bar and the breakfast option (for an additional fee) was good too. Bathrooms were fine.

VERY LOUD on a Saturday night. DJ downstairs playing music earth-shatteringly loud for no obvious reason. was hard to sleep (we were jet lagged)

Personally I found the pillows really uncomfortable, and would maybe have appreciated having some sort of blind for the beds to offer a bit more privacy.
the kitchens were extremely well maintained and stocked with ample free food, I thought the bar was lively and the dorms were spacious with good storage space

The place was very welcoming. Staff was friendly and helpful. Beds were comfy and there was plenty of bathrooms. Breakfast was also good and there was traditional treats from Iceland ;)

We stayed in the private twin room. It's directly over the bar, so the music is pretty loud. It didn't really bother me, but may be a problem for those who sleep lightly. The music always stopped by midnight or 1am on weekends.
Nice hostel with spacious room and good share kitchen.
