Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesThe booking information described it as a hotel. It’s actually more like an Airbnb with no host on the site. We arrived to an empty house, waiting for someone to show up, having arrived prior to the check in time in the listing. We phoned Booking.com and were told that the host had sent a message earlier that day through Booking.com stating there would be no host and we could enter the property on our own. As we were traveling, we didn’t receive the message. Kind of a mess for the arrival.
The main room was large and comfortable. It had a tasteful Japanese style with generous natural light.

AustraliaThe climb up the hill. Nobody there to greet us. No complementary ride from the station. Poor quality linen and towels. No toiletry kits. The property is getting run down. No security.
The location was good to see temples and to go hiking.

ItalyGetting from the station to the ryokan is a small adventure if you have heavy bags. I wasn't able to find the showers without messaging the staff. As the bathroom and showers are shared, the cleanliness depends on the ones that used them before you.
Getting from the ryokan to the station is pretty fast. The Japanese style room was big and the futon was extremely comfortable. The hiking trails available directly behind the ryokan were great. You can easily get to a nice temple area hiking through the mountains in 1-2 hours.

New ZealandIf you are new to Japan then FYI the host does not live on site, so if you want to ask questions and have this sort of interaction then then this may not be the best place to stay for your first few nights in Japan. (as some fellow guests experienced). It is also up a hill, about 10minutes walk from the subway, which again isn't a problem if you don't mind walking up hills!
Worth the commute to stay somewhere quiet, with good walking tracks on the doorstep.

United StatesThe summer nights left the upstairs room a little warm and humid
The location sits at the top of a hill and is very quiet throughout the day. It is also right next to a trail that has many shrines along it. The ryokan itself feels very much like a home, and there are plenty of small things around it to take care of guests.

CanadaThe place is not suitable for a family ! It is clearly operated like a hostel, people come and go at all hours of the night, loud in the rooms and common areas. All sounds go through paper thin walls. Bathrooms dirty and in 3 days and nights stays no one came to clean despite many guests being there ! Garbage piling up in bathrooms and kitchen, with nowhere to empty it ! Despite a good communication with host, this place was very disappointing and clearly not for a family stay !
Nothing really !

United StatesDislike all Be cautious about this place; it is not a traditional Japanese-style ryokan. Instead, it is just a regular house that has been divided into separate rooms. The rooms lack toilets, showers, or bathtubs—all facilities are shared, located outside, and are very dirty. The rooms, futons (mattresses), and blankets are extremely unhygienic, with hair from previous guests found everywhere. There is no staff on-site, and when you call for assistance, they respond rudely, yelling in broken English and Japanese, making communication very difficult. If you ask why the room doesn’t match the photos, they place your call on hold with loud background noise (speaking another language, possibly Chinese). The photos used in their advertisements are highly misleading—they feature a downstairs room with a private shower, but this room is not available for regular guests. The door doesn’t even have a key, suggesting it’s staged solely for the photos. I can’t help but question if all the detailed star reviews are even genuine. Don’t waste your money (overpriced)—avoid this place entirely. Stay somewhere else.

United StatesThe “futon” was a foam mattress. I slept ok , I was just expecting a traditional Japanese mattress.
Very close to the train station and there are great walking trails and temples/shrines to visit right behind the property. I had an issue with my room at check-in. It reeked of cigarette smoke. Smoking is not allowed but some people smoke anyway. The staff member called the owner and the owner upgraded me to a different room. The deluxe room was very nice and I was happy with the service.

Hong KongThe room has no hanger or hook, I cannot hang up my jacket and cloth, only 2 shower to be shared by 10 rooms, say 20 customers, also not enough restroom to be shared, it reminds me when I was in university, we shared bathroom in dormitory.
The rooms are big, clean and bright.

NetherlandsLocation is far, especially since it is some distance from a station, it would better to stay near a station further away. The house is very noisy and we could hear the sounds of other guests throughout the night. The room is small but passable. The blanket was for 1 person, so we were not able to sleep well.
The kitchen, although quite dirty was free to use and offered amenities such as tea and chopsticks

AustraliaAn absolute disaster in my current trip to Japan. I have come to Japan seven times, stayed at many hotels, hostels and ryokans. It is highly false advertising. You can see from my photo of the room. No such photo was shown of the place. No towel offered, you can see the clothes hangers are made of absolute rubbish,as are the bed sheet and pillow. there was so much noise by the lady who managed the house throughout my 2 days stay in the house (certainly not qualified for a ryokan). I felt absolutely no sense of ease and calm in this place. The lady who managed this place arrived 25 minutes after 4.00pm. I had to wait for her until she arrived. She completely ignored me and angrily went about cleaning the room I was booked into. It is not what I expect in Japan. But then she is not Japanese. Without lowering myself further about how bad my experience about this place, I shared an earlier post made by previous reviewer (Wai 26/11/23) about this place. He gave it a 1. I shall be twice more generous. I give it a 2.

South AfricaBeware they are scammers! They lure you in with this listing then send you to another terrible location. They then won't refund you in full when you try cancel. They ruined our Kyoto stay with their lies and deception. The other place is 2km from the original address and we wasted money taking a taxi there from the original listing address.
