Small onsen town with superb views and community

The bath was really good and comfortable, the room was big, and location is a little out of the way, but it's a good place to relax at, no distractions.

Just a word of warning really - make sure you book a room with a meal plan. We did not as we have difficult dietary constraints for a traditional Japanese dinner/breakfast, and ended up having to drive 30 minutes to find a tsuruya that was open on a Thursday night. Don't let google maps fool you into thinking there are places to get dinner nearby, they are either only open on the weekend, or not open for dinner. Google maps also lies about opening hours, we tried a few places that were supposedly open but turned out not to be. There is a Lawson about 10 mins away if you get really stuck. One other small thing - in the downstairs bath I could hear the water pump going constantly and it was just a bit loud to really enjoy the bath properly.

This traditional onsen ryokan oozes charm. It obviously has a long history and there are old photos and antiques on display that add to the atmosphere. As soon as you walk in the door it feels a bit like stepping back in time (in a good way) Our room was spacious and cosy, with a beautiful view of the river just out the window. I could have sat and watched it for hours, and the sound of the water is very relaxing. The baths are small and simple but have a nice aesthetic. The water could have been a bit warmer for my preference, but it was still nice. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the service was excellent, and we were treated to a complimentary coffee at their roastery cafe across the street in the morning. I don't think they speak much English but it wasn't a problem for us as we can speak enough Japanese to get by. Overall, a lovely place to stay, would definitely stay here again if I was in the area.
