Dinners and breakfasts, because they very elaborated, have a fixed very traditional menu. Foreign travelers might find some of it a bit exotic.

Located in the extraordinary village of Shirakawa, this ryokan surprised me for the very elaborated breakfasts and dinners. Guests are allowed to visit the thermal baths inside the hotel, which face the river Sho. I highly recommend this place.

great location - close to bus station. The Japanese breakfast and dinner were a unique and special experience. Staff were very helpful and friendly. The mineral water baths were wonderful. Well worth the experience. Shirakawa is a very beautiful location with lots of history, peaceful and well-presented village.

Few places to sit on a chair. Rather than just zabuton in the room a floor chair with back support to go under the kotatsu would be good- especially for Westerners who aren’t used to sitting on the floor. A couple of seats outside next to the ofuro so that you could sit out and cool down for a while before getting back in.

The futons were a little too flat for me. I love futon but maybe a little bit more cushions. The food was very elaborated but not as much taste.

Beautiful hotel, with the view on the water. Traditional and very quiet for relaxation. The price is worth it with the dinner included since there is nothing open at night for dinner. Nice Onsen. I will come back!

The (western style) room was a bit basic, it would be so much cooler to get a tatami room (which they have) and come with a group of friends to drink sake with at dinner. I wish Japanese hotels would invest in better pillows.

I've never done the Ryokan experience before, and it was great to enjoy the onsen and wear a yukata to a dinner (which had more than 20 different things to eat!). The location was perfect, not even 50 meters from the bus station and with a gorgeous view of the river.
