Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

SingaporeThe hosts are very lovely, taking time out to bring me to a ski rental shop and also helped to find earphones I left behind. Not to mention the very delicious breakfast! Highly recommended for an authentic Japanese homestay experience. Such a gem, and would definitely stay here if I come to Kusatsu onsen again.

Finally got my time to get this review down, totally 5 stars experience, free nice traditional breakfast and bedroom , 1 group of guest per day, live with host together. The hosts are very nice couple, they gave me very good suggestions about local free onsen and food, and they are very helpful. Thank you for everything!

AustraliaNothing.
The hosts were considerate and kind. The lady host made me a warm orange honey drink when she noticed I had a cough. The breakfast was also amazing.

United StatesI loved everything about my stay with Masayuki and Shinobu. They were like my parents. Shinobu-san is such an amazing cook. I loved all her meals. I really felt like I was a part of their family. They had cooked me breakfast every morning and I even got to try delicious monjayaki with the family. The house does not have a bath in it, but there are many many onsens around. I took at least 2 baths a day 😂 I was so relaxes I have even accidentally left my passports at one of the onsens and Masayuki was nice enough to drive me to the police station to retrieve it. It was truly such a relaxing vacation. I definitely plan on coming back and bringing my mom. I want my Japanese mom to meet my real mom lol. When they dropped me off at the bus stop going back to tokyo and waved me goodbye I cried and used the towel they gave me to wipe my tears. I miss this family already and I definitely intend on coming back. Also the crepes at Shinobu-san's cousins place Watowa cafeわとわ was delicious and so was the ramen at the shop of another cousin - called "草津温泉 濃厚豚骨らーめん 豚りんの" was both so delicious I went back to each place twice.

United StatesGreeted warmly upon early arrival a couple of hours before check-in time. Communication via booking.com was easy and responsive. The home is beautifully cared for and immaculately clean with traditional interior decor. Thoughtful amenities were provided, including complimentary entry to a nearby onsen (no bath at home, private toilet outside room). Separate tatami rooms for lounging, sleeping and eating upstairs. Breakfast was fabulous and the highlight of my stay! So many tasty dishes presented on individual dishware in an elaborate spread that tops any ryokan breakfast I've ever had in Japan. The flavors brought back many fond memories from my childhood when my grandma would cook for me. I will return again the next time I'm in Kusatsu Onsen!

TaiwanThe host is really nice and helpful. I got to put my luggage there before check in, I was so surprised that the host even helped me to clean the wheels of the suitcase. The room is really clean and comfortable, I got three rooms to use one for breakfast, one as living room, and one as bedroom. When I went out for dinner, the host even helped me to turn on the heater in the room. And the breakfast is really delicious and wealthy, cannot finished it all Really recommend the place, though there is no shower for use, the host gave me a ticket for the hot spring (onsen).

SwitzerlandWe got here with a car and it was a bit tight of a fit, since all the roads in Kusatsu are rather small. There's no shower but that's what the Onsen are there for! Also it might get a bit chilly in Winter!
We got a lot of rooms in the upper floor, including a Bedroom, a Tatami relaxing room and a room where we could eat breakfast! The food was delicious and there was plenty of it too! The Yubatake is just a quick hop away and there is lots of Restaurants close by. Our hosts were a very friendly couple with a dog who also live in the house. They speak amazing English!

United StatesStaying with Masayuki and his family was by far the highlight of my visit. From sharing a beer in the afternoon to an incredible breakfast prepared by his wife Shinobu in the morning, I had an absolutely lovely stay. If you want to meet the best locals in Kusatsu and enjoy an authentic experience then do yourself a favor and spend the night with the Kato family.

JapanI've done a bit of solo travelling, and this was by far the loveliest experience I've had at an accomodation. The innkeepers were the nicest people; I felt like I was part of a family. Amazing food and hospitality. I'll definitely be coming back again. Highly, highly recommend to anyone visiting Japan who want to experience a local culture.

United StatesNothing, this place is great!
This guesthouse is a wonderful place to stay as a base for exploring Kusatsu Onsen and nearby areas- excellent location, very close to everything in the center of town, super easy to get to from the bus station, beautiful and very comfortable Japanese-style rooms, and Masa-san and Shinobu-san are *amazing* hosts! The breakfasts Shinobu-san cooked were delicious, and they were SO kind to show me around town. Will definitely stay here again!

JapanCouple was extremely friendly and welcoming to our family of 2 adults and 2 children. While we originally booked for 3 adults anticipating that the breakfast would be a challenge for the kids to finish, the couple accommodated by preparing 2 kids sized portions (in addition to 2 adult sized portions) at no additional charge. Couple also truly went out of their way to make us feel at home - from drying our wet boots by the fire to clearing the snow from our car before we departed for the day, their attention to detail was remarkable. The only down side was the lack of a shower place at the property, but the husband’s cousin owns another place with an attached onsen nearby that we could go to at no additional cost. IMO, not a deal breaker since we are in kusatsu with tons of onsens to try from anyway. Highly recommended place should you be in the area!
