Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

GermanySuper friendly and the view from the terrace is great. I got a full rundown on where to go in Suwa and was well prepared for the few hours I had exploring the vicinity.

Hong KongThe check-in time is a little bit late (4:00pm) while he check-out time is too early (9:00am). As the hostel does not provide luggages keeping service, I may have to pick all of my family luggages down hill and find a place to store if I want to stay one more afternoon in Suwa. It would be more customer-considerate to revise the check-in and check-out time to 3:00pm and 11:00am respectively. Or at least providing luggage keeping service to customers.
The tidiness of the hostel as well as the hospitality of the hostel owner.

It’s a relatively good location - close to the train station and nice hotels/ bars - and the owner was very friendly

FranceToilets weren't clean with piss on it when I arrived while I was the only guest and I had to clean it. Lots of hair in the showers and room. I don't understand why but even with the AC on the box was so cold and didn't warm at all. Lucky enough I got a blanket and could sleep. Overall it was not that bad just way to expensive. You expect more for this range of price.
The host is welcoming. The accommodation is really near to kami-suwa station, less than 10 min by foot. And the view from the accommodation is wonderful.

CanadaLocation is about a 10 minute walk from the closest station but is located on a steep hill with several flights of stair. Bed was hard and difficult to sleep in.
Prime location for visiting Lake Suwa, pricing for the location was not bad either.

GermanyThe house rule of not being able to stay during the day is completely stupid!! We paid so much for this accomodation and then we get kicked out of the place every morning. That was very annoying. From 9-16h you can't enter, not even to pick up something of your stuff or have a little rest. Also the showed you're just allowed to use until 8 o clock. S in my holiday i had to set an alarm to be able to shower. Staff is kind but very inflexible with these rules. And they speak very little English. The space is very small. The triple room was almost worse than the dormitory because you kind of have to step over the person sleeping on the ground and there's very little space for luggage.
The location of the inn was good for what we wanted to do in suwa if you don't mind climbing up the stairs. There's a small terrace with a beautiful view.

United StatesBy far the worst experience ever. You can't stay in the house from 9:00 to 16:00. What a ridiculous rule is this?! You have to check in before 19:00. No towels, no toothbrushes, no cups. Showering is practically impossible if you don't bring your own towels. Loud talking in the early morning. The owner opened my room door without permission.

United KingdomThe room was not clean. There was dust in the corners and the blinds which we had to touch to close the window (which the owner had left open) were filthy. The room was tiny and it was just two thin futon mattresses on the floor but nothing else. We knew it was futons but it was so basic. It was also so expensive for what we got (we travelled Japan for a month and this was the worst place we stayed yet one of the most expensive. We stayed in places with onsens and with swimming pools for the same price as this! The woman was quite controlling about stipulating times that we should be in and out. She said we had to check-out by 9am. This was fine on the actual check-out day as I would expect to have a check-out time. But I do not expect a check-out time for the day before, when we are not even checking out. On this day, we were filling up our water bottles and getting ready to go out for the day. We left for our day out about 9:15am but she charged us 600 Yen for "late check-out".
The location (once you have climbed the horrendous stairs) is good as it is close to Lake Suwa and the town. The woman had lots of information to give us about Kami-Suwa, such as a restaurant that we liked and information about the fireworks.

Japanthere`s a rule about charging extra for checking in after 19pm. since the check-in time is from 16pm-19pm, this almost feels like extorsion. even though it is summer and the house is close to nature, there were too many insects inside. m wife found a worm on her bed lining and we saw a couple big flyes on the kitchen. some facilities were old and almost non-functional, for example the kitchen is very small and has no space to actually cook. only a small fridge, toaster and microwave available. if i had a longer stay, that would have been a big problem for me. room was extremely hot in the middle of the night. lastly, another rule is that everyone has to go to bed at 23pm. i think it makes some sense due to the lack of staff and poor sound proof on the house, but the reality was that i woke up after midnight with a lot of noises going on (alerts from the air conditioner, some kind of maintenance or cleaning going on another room, heavy steps).
room layout is interesting. apparently, it is an old house with some modern touches. it was only guest house available on the date of my trip.

JapanAlthough it was no problem for me, reaching the hostel requires to follow a path with stairs for a bit.
The location was very nice and quiet, and the views of Suwa lake spectacular. The sleeping boxes were quite spacious, and their privacy was good. On the other hand, I can't thank enough the owner for their kindness and help. The owner even told me about a firefly event and helped me see it. I am very happy I stayed there, and hope I have another chance to go in the future.

CanadaI guess I didn't realize when I booked that this place was up a bunch of stairs so just keep that in mind when you book. This wasn't my issue about the place though. The moment we arrived, no one was there to help us check in. We had to call out for her and I think eventually found a bell to ring. This woman comes over to us in a frenzy apologizing for the wait. As soon as she sees our suitcases she says "this isn't a hotel". I'm sorry but I never asked you if you were. I just happened to be travelling with a suitcase. We check in, she puts bags on the floor for our luggage to protect the tatami mats which is completely understandable. All is good. I probably had one of my worst nights of sleep here because the futons were so thin that I might as well have slept directly on the floor. I've slept on many futons in Japan on past and present trips but this was by far the worst one. Then the next morning, she doesn't even knock! She just opens our door at 6:50am acting like she was so sorry to bother us but that check out is at 9am. There are signs all over the guest house informing us what time check out is at so I don't see why you would barge into our room that early in the morning to let us know. Then my friend asks about a towel. "Not a hotel!!" Yes, understood but even all of the hostels and guest houses I've stayed at have towels for rent. Then she gives us hand towels and asks us for 300 yen. An absurd price for a towel that's not even a towel. Wether or not you are a hotel, I don't know too many people who travel with their own towel. Besides all of this, the entire building was freezing! Nothing was pleasant about our stay and I don't understand how everyone speaks highly of the host. We felt like we were being negatively judged and that she was breathing down our necks the entire time. Total micro managing. I could not wait to leave! Definitely not worth the price.
The only positive thing I can say about this place is that the view was nice. I'm not one to leave negative reviews but I just feel like I need to share my experience since it was probably one of my worst stays anywhere and people need the heads up.
