Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United StatesFantastic value! Excellent location near onsens and dining in Shibu Onsen. Incredibly hospitable owners who took good care of us and drove us where we needed to go. Room was much bigger than indicated on booking.com - big enough for our family of 3 - and had a private toilet and sink. We enjoyed the private on-site onsens, both the sex-separated and family ones. Note that pillows are traditional buckwheat husk pillows which may be too firm for some (they may offer western style pillows too - we didn’t ask). Kaneshin was our favorite nearby restaurant for dinner.

SwitzerlandThe hosts were kind and made the stay comfortable and relaxing. I liked the in-house onsen a lot and having access to the small onsen scattered across the town was great.

The following day they drove us to the monkey park and after a few hours brought us back to the ryokan and even to the train station!!! Best customer service of all time!

AustraliaExceptionally polite staff. We were given lifts from and to the train and the owner gave us a lift to the Jigokudani Yaen Koen. The royokan is perfectly located with the exit facing the street on which the public baths are located.

SingaporeWonderful and caring couple owner. Very grateful he picked us up from the train station and sent us to the snow monkey park. During our 3 days stay we ordered breakfast and it was very delicious and nicely presented in Bento by his wife. The place is very clean.

SingaporeWhile it's not the Ryokan's fault, we regretted not ordering breakfast. We slept so well that we didn't wake up early enough to get breakfast from the nearby restaurant, and by the time we arrived, there were limited options left. Additionally, since it's a small town, dinner spots tend to sell out quickly, and most restaurants close before 9pm. We recommend having dinner before heading to the public onsens.
We booked two rooms—one for two adults and one for three teenagers. The rooms were spacious, and the tatami beds were incredibly comfortable. Each room had its own private toilet, and the shower area was conveniently located with the onsite onsens. There is also an outdoor private Onsen (which we unfortunately didn’t have time to use), as well as separate male and female indoor onsens for those who prefer not to brave the cold for the public ones. As guests of the ryokan, we had free access to eight out of the nine public onsens. Yukata and Geta were provided for use with the onsens. The owners were extremely helpful and kind, even driving us to the snow monkeys and to Yudanaka station for our train. My whole family was very happy with our stay.

United KingdomNo dinner was offered and although there’s a few restaurants around, they were either closed or full. Originally wanted to explore area around ryokan after the snow monkey park but the husband was on a tight schedule and dropped me off at the station directly, which was a shame.
Amazing hosts who offered pick up/drop off to Yudanaka station and the snow monkey park. Loved having the private open-air onsen to myself - it was not as hot as the indoor bath. It left my skin silky smooth. Also had an amazing Japanese breakfast added. Easy access to the 9 public onsens but I didn’t use as the ryokan had its own.

AustraliaNothing. Shares bathroom facilities which we were fine with.
Very spacious and beautifully presented rooms in traditional Ryokan in the middle of Shibu Onsen. Comfortable Tatami beds. Great to have private toilet. The onsite outdoor private Onsen and inside (male/female) onsens were fantastic. Loved the supplied Yukata and Geta for the Onsens. Key supplied for all public onsens through town. The owners were so helpful and kind, driving us to and from snow monkeys and to Yudanaka station for our train. Enjoyed the traditional home made breakfast delivered to our room at reasonable price in beautiful bento box.

This was our first stay at a ryokan. Our hosts were very pleasant and attentive. We couldn't have asked for a kinder welcome. Our host came to the train station to pick us up, showed us around and provided us with lots of information about things to do around Shibu Onsen. His recommendation of Enza Cafe and its food was excellent. We were also able to borrow ice cleats for our walk to the snow monkey park. Our hostess delivered a traditional homemade Japanese breakfast to our room in the morning. The meal was presented beautifully in a lacquer box and it was delicious and healthy.

United KingdomI wouldn't say this is a bit of a negative however note that if you're going to see the snow monkeys the same day as check out, you will need to take your luggage with you and store them at Kanbayashi Hotel Senjukak. It's ¥500 per luggage, that hotel is on route to the snow monkey park. I did ask if I could leave my luggage at Daymaruya Ryokan but I was told I had to take my luggage with me and store them at the snow monkey information centre.
The hosts were very friendly. They were very accommodating and were able to pick me up from Yudanaka station after messaging them the same day of arrival. The onsens onsite were very good as well. The room itself was also very nice and clean.
