Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesI felt the beds were a bit uncomfortable, but this is more that I am not used to futons.
Located directly next to Gora station after a beautiful train ride up the mountains, this place was an incredible value for the cost. A couple of restaurants nearby and walking distance to the Hakone Open Air Museum. The hostel itself is very modern and the staff spoke English well. The onsen was very nice. Staff is more than happy to hold your luggage before and after check-in/check-out so that you don't need to worry about going there too late or leaving early.

Very close to the train station. The dinner is good. You can ask for more clean towels.

AustraliaCan’t fault anything. Loved it. Only regret was not allocating more time to stay longer. We stayed two nights.
Staff were so friendly, obliging and eager to please. It was my birthday while there and every staff member wished me a happy birthday which made it very special! The room had plenty of space and it was lovely to have beautiful scenery out the window with a wonderful sunrise. Access is so easy by train, a little challenging by bus - we made the mistake of arriving by bus and needed to walk up the many many stairs in the rain only to laugh at how easy the train would have been. Train it was on leaving! It’s great spot to start the whole Hakone day pass with the cable cart right there at the train station. Lots of eateries to choose from. And the onsen was just divine with a special touch to receive a complimentary electrolyte drink afterwards. They were happy to store our luggage for our last day while we made the most of exploring the area. Breakfast was a great buffet style with with plenty of options for various taste buds! Nothing was a problem.

Room was clean and spacious with 4 beds. Staff were friendly and helpful. Hotel was a 2-minute walk from the train station but was still quiet. The cable car that takes you up the hill to get great views of Mt Fuji was also just a 2-minute walk away. 10 min walk to the openair art museum which was handy. Coffee shop and restaurants are also close by. The Hotel had its own Onsen.

United StatesThe lights in the onsen are so bright but bright lights are an issue across Japan.
It's listed as a hostel but this is more like what we know in the States as an Ace Hotel (meaning: cool and nice!). We got a room with its own bathroom but some rooms have shared. Anyway, we loved our stay and the small onsen was quiet and perfect for a soak after a long day of walking. There is an on-site restaurant where we had a Western style breakfast. Loved the Yakutas they left for us to wear to the onsen. Only wish they had them for sale to take home.

United KingdomOn Mondays something to note is the restaurant is closed if you wanted to use this.
Stylish, modern but Japanese in style. Comfortable space, room huge considering with a small table and seat. Bathroom is a wet room as such but also a big space. Loved the large window and lighting. Also loved the extra touch of the diffuser to help with the dry air. Great location for Gora. We didn’t use the onsen because we are prudes and couldn’t get comfortable naked… but they explained everything to us which is helpful.

United KingdomThe Restaurant is closed on Mon and Tues evenings so we couldn't eat in the hotel. Our stay was in December so some of the local eateries were closed or closed very early. Don't expect much nightlife in winter. We found a great pizza place round the corner and also ate in another hotel for our second evening.
Outstanding stay for a family of four sharing a family room. Conveniently located right next to the station and it is as stylish as it looks in the photos. Staff were super friendly and helpful and spoke great English. Spacious room with lovely bedding, toiletries and robes provided. Easy breakfast with a limited range of European and Japanese options. Tasty and filling. The onsen is gorgeous, small and indoor but very beautiful. A great experience; I was a little nervous about getting naked with strangers but advise anyone to go for it. Noone cares what you look like and it was a highlight of our Japan trip for me. Highly reccommend this place.

Sauna was small but relaxing. There were laundry machines you can easily use (takes coins). Breakfast was a good variety of Western focused cuisine.

United StatesFiguring out the train and bus situation for the area took a second. The hotel is right next to the station but when it comes to exploring the Hakone area you have to train elsewhere and then bus. I found google maps not 100% accurate. The front desk did show me a map and gave some advice which I appreciated!
I paid extra for their set menu and it was absolutely fantastic. What a great meal! I stayed in a dorm room, but it felt like the most relaxing and fancy hostel I've ever been at. It was a very relaxing vibe all around. The dorm spots were spacious and clean. The onsen was fantastic. I loved it here!
