Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

Czech RepublicAfter staying at several Ryokans, I discovered that some offer more privacy than others. However, the walls here are incredibly thin, to the point where you can hear your neighbors breathing while they sleep. Earplugs are definitely a must. Additionally, this Ryokan is quite far from the port compared to other accommodations
It was a nice experience. Spacious room. The mattress on the tatami and the heavy blanket were so comfy that I had a great sleep (with earplugs, of course)

Very nice and beautiful house. Everything is thought out, a lot of pleasant little things. They were very hospitable and helped me navigate the ferries and museums. It was very nice to stay here.

United KingdomWe loved our stay here. We arrived late after our car had broken down and the host was so kind and helped us communicate with the rental company. The house is beautifully decorated, and you instantly feel at home. We wish we could have stayed for longer. If you’re looking for somewhere to stay after a day on Naoshima or Teshima, then look no further!

GermanyIf you have a light sleep it might be a bit challenging. Part of the original experience is paper thin walls between the rooms. I did think it was a genuinely great experience though and part of the country!
If you want a really original experience, this is your place. Staying at Toranjyo-lit feels like your Japanese Grandmother invited you in. I really liked the charm of the house. Staff was very friendly and especially great in communication through messages. Everything is put down very carefully and thoughtfully, you can lend a lot of things (kimonos for the house, towels, hot warer bottel,….). In the kitchen I could prepare tea and food. They even sell some soup and snacks. The vegan options surprised me and were VERY welcome!! The room was spacious and very beautiful. The garden is very original and meditative with a great view over the city. If you want to take day trips to either of the art islands, it’s the perfect place. The ferry is just 15 min away and the staff will explain everything very nicely.

Perfect guesthouse if you are travelling to Naoshima. You can take the ferry. it’s only 20 minutes on the boat and the port is 10-15 min walk away. The house was full of character and amenities were great (think snacks, tea, pyjamas, tooth paste, first aid kit,…). Room was very clean and comfortable. Very warm welcome when we arrived and received useful information about the ferry etc. Would’ve stayed longer than one night because this place was so nice.

AustraliaThis was such a magic place to stay and Yuki was a dream host, even making us a beautiful dinner on her birthday evening AND sharing her birthday cake! The house is traditional and well loved but so homely and comfortable with every attention to detail thought of. It was beautiful sleeping in a traditional tatami room, and even though the walls are thin the earplugs provided worked a treat. A beautiful stay, we wish we could have been there longer!

Fun experience trying to live in a beautiful, traditionel Ryokan. Yuki was such an amazing host, helpful with recommendations, cooking us delicious breakfast and sweet to drive us to and from the station. Other members of staff also made a huge effort to make us feel very welcome. So happy with our stay at Toranjyo-lit and would definitely come back :-)

GermanyThe traditional houses have paper walls, so in case you would need more privacy maybe chose something else, for us it was totally fine though. The location is approximately 15 min walk to the ferry connecting to the art islands, so that is also important to keep in mind if you don’t want to walk much.
We had a great stay at toranjyo lit, a traditional ryokan house. It is simple but has everything you need and it’s very charming. The staff was also very friendly and helpful, giving us tips how to structure our nioshima/teshima trip and picking us up from the bus stop.
