The hostel is in a beautiful traditional Japanese house. It has all the necessary equipments for travelers. Also, our host Taku was extremely nice and helpful with a lot of good advices for cafés, restaurants, breweries...thank you so much!

This stay was a highlight of our trip so far. Walking in felt like visiting a friends house. Taku welcomes you in and is invited in what you want to do with your stay. He even helped us with recommendations for the next part of our trip. The rooms are really nice and very comfortable, the location is fantastic and really close to everything, and the value for money is exceptional

This place is so wonderful! It lies in a residential area not far from the city center of Takayama, thus it’s quiet in the night — and I slept really well in a comfortable bed. Everything was always clean and the kitchen has a lot of utensils in case you feel like cooking yourself. If not, Taku, the host, has a lot of recommendations for good meals around town. And hikes (!) if that’s your thing. He made my stay at this beautifully thought-out and crafted place truly worthwhile, arigatō gozaimashita.

The house was beautiful, perfect location, and close to interesting sports, and public transport. The property manager /Owner was kind and helpful. He did a quick introduction regarding the city, restaurants, interest points, etc. as soon as we arrived. Exelent service.

Such a nice place with the coziest vibe! Very comfortable to be here and the facilities are very good. The best thing about this place is absolutely Taku who runs it. He’s so welcoming, helpful and nice to chat with, and he gave us some really good recommendations, not only to get the best out of Takayama, but also for our further trip in Japan.

Everything! Specially the host Tacu. He is a really cool guy and our room was one of the most beautiful we have had in Japan. Great beds and view to the little garden. Nice house, great place! Like staying with a friend :)

This is such a beautiful property! It was warm and cosy and probably the cleanest accommodation we've ever stayed in. The rooms are spacious and the mattresses are really big, we both had a very good night's sleep! You can walk to the hostel from the bus and train station and it's also 5 minute walk from a huge supermarket. There are also only a very small number of rooms available at the hostel so we were quite lucky to have seen and booked it. Thank you for all your kind hospitality, Taku! We will be back again!

This is a very well run and well appointed little hostel. The owner, Tack, was very friendly and helpful. The hostel is within easy walking distance of the train and bus station as well as the Old Town.

What a lovely place, the moment you enter the door you feel welcome. We stayed in the room with the garden view and the atmosphere was great. The beds are comfortable and even though the showers are outside of the room you still have a private shower assigned to the room. Everything is really clean. Taku is an incredible host, accessible and super helpful. We would come back any time and highliy recommend Fish in a River.

My stay was truly memorable. The host provided perfect recommendations and engaging conversations that made my trip even more enjoyable. The house, built mostly out of wood, exuded a unique and charming ambiance that I absolutely loved. I had a very comfortable stay, and the host was always willing to answer my questions about local food and tourist attractions, which greatly enhanced my experience. The bathrooms were exceptionally clean, and the beds were super comfy, ensuring a restful night's sleep. I highly recommend this guesthouse to anyone looking for a cozy and delightful place to stay.
