Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

AustraliaThe shower in my room took forever to heat up. Basically, you need to use the communal bathroom if you want hot water.
Very large, Japanese style rooms. Had a nice communcal bathing area. Proprietor was very nice and helped me book my next stay in Japanese. She also let me borrow a bike to go see the nearby sites. Close to train station.

AustraliaNothing at all. We had minimal contact with the staff, so can't comment.
Our room was a spacious, Japanese style tatami room, with its own bathroom attached. There was a comfortable sitting area with a view over the neighbouring fields to the surrounding hills. Breakfast was a tray with tradional salmon, rice and pickles, which we like, but there was bread and jam also if you wanted. Staying at Iris Yu was excellent value and allowed us to stay overnight in Hiraizumi, with time to see all the various historic sights. It was an easy walk from the station. Once we realised that Google maps took us to the back if the property, we continued around the block to the front. We found a cosy Izakaya rown a side road for dinner, run by two cheerful mama sans who served us a mountain of food.

NetherlandsThe futons are rather thin, and hardly cushion the tatami floor. The window has no blinds, bathing the room in bright light from dawn onward. It's not the most comfortable experience.
The inn is centrally located, within walking distance of the railway station, several restaurants and some of the main Hiraizumi sights. There's free parking on-site and everything is kept very clean, including the shared bathrooms. The staff are discrete, we hardly saw them but they were readily available when needed. A helpful map with tips for places to eat nearby is provided.

AustraliaNo lift, so be prepared to carry your bags upstairs. The Japanese futon beds seemed to be particularly hard, even though we were into our third week of sleeping on tatami mats and futons.
Iris Yu was easy to find. Check-in is not until 4pm, but we were able to leave our luggage there and go explore Hiraizumi. The owner was very friendly, and helped us make a restaurant reservation for dinner, as there are limited options in town.

GermanyI am getting too old for futon. Personally I couldn’t sleep at all on the futon as it was too hard. But that’s potentially more a „me“ thing. Everything else was great and an authentic Japanese experience
Great place to stay, friendly people, good restaurant and station close by

Hong Kong-As noted in the room information, it takes a while (5-8 minutes) for the hot water to get going in the washroom. But once it reaches the desired temperature it's sufficiently stable.
-The Inn is within walking distance from Hiraizumi Station. -The room in spacious, well appointed, and immaculately clean. The view from my 2F room is refreshingly expansive. -The manager was cordial and willing to communicate with non-Japanese travellors. -Overall with limited accommodation options in Hiraizumi, Iris Yu represents great value as long as you don't expect the luxury ryokan experience.

United StatesThe reason for the low rating is because they were doing construction on the building -- specifically the roof. Started at 8:30 am and went all day. We would not have booked here had we known of this, as it made the room unusable during the day.
Lovely large room with private bath and work area. Big hot tub/bath on first floor which we could also use. Good location, about 4 blocks from the train station.

GermanyThe room has no curtains which means you wake up with the sun coming through the shoji door. Then if you want to open them for more light, you're right on the street with zero privacy. The room was also very cold, and because of using a gas heater it was dangerous to leave it on all night (so bring pajamas!).
Lovely renovated ryokan right in the middle of Hiraizumi. A few minutes walk from the station also connects you to Ichinoseki, and other cities along the line. Japanese room was clean and well decorated with traditional pieces, ryokan offers communal (not-mixed) hot baths, cheap laundry machines, and a number of snacks etc at reception.

GermanyBe aware that in the traditional japanese rooms you will sleep on a futon on the floor, so if you have a sensitive back, this might be a problem for you.
The location is excellent, 10-15 Minutes to Chosun-Ji, 7 Minutes to the station. The inkeeper herself is very friendly and helpful and provides a good breakfast. The rooms are simple but comfortable enough. Overall a great stay for a small budget.

AustraliaBeing a traditional style building, it's quite noisy, I could hear people walking up and down the corridor or opening and closing their doors and wardrobes. I absolutely LOVE the look of the futon and tatami, but I must say it is not comfortable for most of us westeners. It's like sleeping on the ground 🥲 The aircon unit in the room is old but worked well, anywhere else in the building (corridors, bathroom, etc) was crazy hot and humid. I appreciated so very much that the host tried to accomodate for my vegan breakfast, however food was quite plain and could be improved.
Traditional style accommodation, gives you the chance to sleep in a futon on the tatami, wear a yukata, and utilise shared bathroom facility, or sento. It is worth the experience 😊 it's reasonably close to Hiraizumi station (about 10 minutes walk) and the host very kindly tried to accomodate for my vegan requirements for breakfast. Bathroom and toilets were clean.

United StatesThe hallway and second floor is hot and stuffy. You need to keep the air conditioning in room always running.
It is near the main attraction, 毛越寺. And since the town is small, the walking distance from the railway station is also easy to manage: one large street, 7 minutes straight. The place is very clean, and the staff very friendly. There is a public bath on the first floor.

GermanyI liked the room, but some might find the futon too thin / too hard.
Good location not far from the station, and for Hiraizumi an ok price. Very friendly. They have older and newer rooms, and you can book without meals (be prepared - nothing is open in Hiraizumi after 4 or 5 pm).
