Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United StatesWe had a wonderful stay and experience at Iroriyado Hidaya. The staff was warm, friendly and accommodating. They assisted with calling taxis for rides to town, making dinner reservations and providing delicious and well presented Japanese and American breakfast. The Ryokan is located about a mile from the center of town but within a 25 minute walk or a 1200 yen taxi ride. In my opinion the experience and accommodation is worth the slight distance inconvenience. There are separate onsens for men and women and a great place for a first experience. Great ryokan experience.

CanadaThe hotel and staff are amazing. The location worked well for us, but we had a rental car. We did walk to Hida no Sato and then into town and back to the hotel as the town is quite walkable. The staff are very kind and go above and beyond in every respect. We enjoyed the onsen but be careful as the wood can be slippery.

SwedenThe location is a bit outside of town; we sometimes used a cab to get back to the hotel after long days of walking.
The Iroriyado Hidaya was the last stop on our two-week vacation in Japan, and it was by far the best! The warm welcome (incl. tea and tailored recommendations for exploring Takayama), the fantastic breakfast (Hoba Miso!), the Irori & Kotatsu in our room and the private baths made our stay in beautiful Takayama perfect. And when there was no taxi available immediately after checkout, staff even drove us to the station. Thank you for making our stay so memorable!

United KingdomThe staff were so incredibly welcoming and kind when we arrived, sitting us by the fireplace with some lovely homemade matcha tea whilst they told us about the hotel and Takayama as a whole. The hotel was beautiful throughout with a genuine ryokan feel to everything, with tatami matting and futon bedding in our room. The staff even treated us to a bespoke kimono/yukata styling session one evening. Breakfast can be either Western or Japanese, we had the latter and it was excellent. Would highly recommend Iroriyado Hidaya to anyone visiting Takayama and wants to have the ryokan experience!

SwitzerlandThe AC in our room was very loud and the internet very flaky.
It was amazing. Excellent amenities and great service. You can pick up a yukata and the hotelier helps you dress up and take pictures. They give you local snacks and sake. There is also a great onsen that can be rented as private late in the evening.

JapanMinor thing. The steps at the entrance are not very easy to take the shoes off and on.
It’s well renovated to preserve Japanese traditional ryokan style BnB. Unfortunately I had a stomach problem on my way to the inn but the staff was so kind to ask kitchen to rearrange the breakfast menu for a sick person.

The place is warm and welcoming; the facilities are wonderful; all decorations are displayed with mindfulness and eloquent thoughts; staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Most importantly, the beds are soooo comfortable!

SingaporeApprox a 10 min drive from Takayama Location is in a more industrial area, but you’re staying indoors anyways!
our favourite stay of our Japan trip!! this was a beautiful cozy ryokan just outside of old town Takayama that we absolutely loved! there weren’t many rooms (6 I think) so everything was very private and personalised. Each room was spacious with a irori (charcoal hearth area) and sleeping area. We loved the cute touches that the ryokan provided - free snacks, a variety of incense sticks to perfume your room, bringing hot charcoal to warm your room! Our host even wrote us a personalised card to welcome us to Takayama and folded an origami crane using paper with our country’s flag printed on it :’) The futons were also plush and sooo comfortable. We also really appreciated having a heated blanket under the table for cozy winter nights. The kaiseki breakfast was so hearty and delicious! You could really tell that everything was so lovingly prepared. The onsen was well maintained and of a comfortable temperature! Even though it was quite small, we hardly saw any other guests using it at the same time Special thanks to Sayuri and Haruka for being such amazing and kind hosts! They really went out of their way to welcome us and shared so many wonderful food recommendations in the area

A very friendly owner! Gave us alot of advise as we worried of the snowstorm traveling from Fuji. Various parking lot available, although the owner said it may be noisy at night but it was fine for us. Is a very nostalgic hotel, you'll get to experience plenty the old Japanese house. Lovely to booked for a private hot spring bath session before sleep with the family too! Breakfast was a nice experience!

MalaysiaNothing really. Maybe just the location is slightly out of town centre but I think it's a minor trade off for such a wonderful stay. The hotel can help you to call a taxi.

Phenomenally welcoming staff made this stay our favorite one in japan. Beautiful house in traditional style while still being exceptionally comfortable and clean. The onsen was modern and clean, with all the products and necessities you could ever need. Delicious teas and snacks, and the breakfast was great as well. Cozy rooms made for a great nights rest, and the experience to dress up in traditional japanese fashion was super fun. And once again, the staff made us feel so welcome and right at home. My sister and I would only every stay at this place if we ever have the chance to return to takayama!

United StatesAmazing ryokan in Takayama, with the friendliest staff and joy-bringing breakfasts. They provide unlimited snacks and room incense, and the room itself was comfortable and warm despite the season. The onsen facilities were modern and relaxing, and they were flexible with onsen timing when asked. Getting around the town was easy via walk or Taxi.
