Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

IrelandThe hostel closes during the day and is open at night, might be tough to sleep if you are a light sleeper

FranceGreat hostel, staff is really nice and the bar area is nice to chill with good priced drinks. The room has a comfy vibe and the bathroom is clean and convenient. Would definitely recommend if you're staying in Otaru for a short or longer time.

NetherlandsI had the idea, that the owner had no time to clean. Everywhere in the bathroom, you could find black hair. It looked a bit improvised, the way the bathroom was made. The soap and shampoo wasn’t refilled. There was no paper to dry your hands after washing. It was not at all cosy, good for sleeping, that’s all. Too expensive for what you get
The bed was goog, it was quiet

JapanWifi is really bad, check-in time is 5pm which is kind of late... like other hostels, there are always guys snoring loudly, but this is kind of expected.
Great location, nice staff, great value. The deer meat was tasty.

SingaporeNothing to dislike really, and it was an interesting setup, ran by students, where students were staying upstairs, and downstairs was a bar.
The place was clean and was the best value and most affordable. The bed does have a lamp installed as well. it was within walkable distance to the bus stop for buses to Sapporo. there was a nice book shelf that acted as a screen for the beds.

AustraliaThe photos show an enclosed cabin which is the bottom bed bunk but the top bed bunk has just a curtain separating you and the next bed and when there is people snoring. My partner also left her watch in the bed and this hostel never replied to any of our messages or emails. Sometimes the toilet wasn’t cleaned for a few days.

JapanThe bed was a little stiff, and one guest was chewing and burping on a stack late at night. But otherwise this was a great short stay.
I liked the vibe and the bookshelf near the beds to get a book and get cozy with. And the bar downstairs is cool.

New Zealand- It was always too hot, especially when sleeping. - There isn't much privacy outside your bunk. - The lockers are laughably too small to secure your luggage, good thing it's Japan - The set up is basically a large room with many bunks in the centre, so as soon as you walk in, you have to be quiet so as not to disturb other guests. That proved to be hard because every little sound is soo loud in there. Definitely recommend earplugs. - The laundry nestled in the shower room is free, but very very messy with wet and dry clothes lumped in the corner. Laundry detergent may or may not be in stock. - Staff is nice, but sometimes a bit hard to find.
One free drink at the bar under $600 Very close to conbini

MalaysiaMy room didn't install curtain, so outside people can see though inside room, and sun rise around 4am so the sunlight will bring up the whole room, and wake me up. Hope the owner can install a curtain!
Overall is good, especially staff service and welcome drinks are impressive (Bartender allow us to choose a drink less than ¥600 each person from the menu). And they have some board games for guests to play. We also found there is some beautiful postcards on book rack, then they offer us some free postcards. Very happy stay and memorable experience!

AustraliaI unfortunately came at the quiet period in Otaru ( April 22-25) and I was the only one in the hostel besides the students that live in the share house. Great hostel though and look forward to coming back here when it’s one of their busy times
Staff were super friendly and helpful with lots of tips of where to go and good restaurants to try. Cool bar area and super close to the canal and main area of Otaru. 10min walk from train station

United StatesBest hostel I’ve stayed at in Japan. Been to quite a few. The manager here, Daigo (I think it’s spelled) is the nicest and super friendly. Easy to stop early and leave bags, good location from the stations and walking to the canal and around town. Super nice bar and lounge, as well as the dorm! Wish I could have stayed longer. Will for sure be back
