Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United StatesNothing really, this was an enjoyable stay!
Excellent combination of public and private onsens! Somehow all the private onsens were open to reserve when we wanted them. We really liked the location slightly away from town - felt like you were more in nature. Dinner and bfast didn’t blow us away, but there was so much food and the service was exceptional.

United StatesThe main open air bath is mixed for men and women most of the time (with some women only hours) which we weren’t aware before booking, but there were still plenty of other opinions that were wonderful too so it was still a good experience.
Beautiful views from our room. Super picturesque and quaint. Waking up to the sound of the river by our room combined with the green lush trees was a highlight of our Japan trip. The actual rooms were wonderful and an eye catching property overall!! Food for both meals was delicious, staff was attentatice. The onsen was so relaxing and had very tranquil views/atmosphere.

AustraliaFuton mattresses need upgrading as they were too thin and quite uncomfortable.
This hotel is amazing. It has a range of room types but we stayed in a traditional family room with futon beds. The room was gorgeous, right next to the river with a little balcony. It was well-appointed and very clean. We had the dinner/breakfast package. The food was incredibly delicious and generous. The onsen set up was fabulous, with separate public male/female indoor and outdoor bathing, plus incredible mixed bathing riverside outdoor pools which are female only for two hours each evening. There are also guest only private onsen baths (indoor and outdoor). You just had to visit reception and get the key. There is even a pool! The grounds are stunningly beautiful. It is so peaceful and just up the road from the main town, so we were able to walk into town to explore but return to the tranquil setting. I highly recommend this place and hope to return one day.

United StatesThe room had a private toilet, but I didn't realize until the next morning that we didn't have a shower! I didn't notice because I was using the onsen as much as I could, but my travel companion was onsen-shy. I actually really enjoyed the traditional vibe of this arrangement, but it could be in issue for travelers who aren't confident about onsen. However, despite this, my travel companion reported that staying here was a total highlight, as they really loved the forest location, the vibe of the Ryokan, the food, and sound of the nearby stream and waterfalls. So while it might seem counterintuitive for an onsen-shy person to come to "Kurokawa Onsen", I think its appeal does go beyond the onsen. And in the end, my travel companion did use the common showers once. So, one small step! The private toilet room (attached to our room) was a little bit on the small side, which may be an issue for very tall people.
Check in was amazing. We had rented a car and the drive into the accommodation was admitted a little harrowing, but despite only perfunctory information from me, the staff seemed to be prescient about our arrival and welcomed us as soon as we drove up and took care of parking the car and starting our check-in process. I initiated check-in using my limited Japanese, and the woman who was helping us proceeded to explain everything in Japanese. I wasn't quite able to understand much of what she said, but since she was largely explaining information provided on a printout that was in both English and Japanese, it was still very easy to comprehend the important points. It was mostly about onsen/bath usage, and then selecting our meal times. Both dinner and breakfast were amazing. Meals were served in a small dining room with 5 tables (there appeared to be additional dining rooms, as well). We only overlapped with 1 other party, so it was nice from an "atmosphere" perspective: not too lonely, but not too crowded. The room was spacious and comfortable. The beds were actually futon on tatami platform (I loved; my companion had to double-up the futon, then was fine). There was a sliding door (with a screen) to a balcony. When open, one can hear the sound of the waterfalls. It was undoubtedly the most relaxing time during our Japan trip. The baths were amazing. I preferred the main outdoor bath and the indoor bath. Both the waterfall and cave baths felt slightly cooler to me, which in addition to being a little smaller..I just preferred to stay in the big one since it felt hotter and more spacious. The nearby town was fun to explore, but felt more like "scenery" than "establishments". Several things were closed. Still, it was fun to walk, with many steps and narrow paths. It doesn't feel like we saw it all in our single day there--all the more reason to return!
