Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Large room, 2 very comfortable futon beds, good shower, ample cooked Chinese breakfast and my husband and I got our own onsen session which was lovely. The owners were very helpful in finding the right onward train for us, drove us to the Snow Monkeys Park and picked us up again, so saving us having to wait for the bus and even gave is a gift when we left. Sleeping in the traditional Japanese room was great fun. Can thoroughly recommend this ryokan.

Lovely hotel. Room is very big with an amazing view of the city and mountains. The room has a traditional ryokan look with tatami floors and futon, the bathroom has a nice little bathub. The onsen is nice and clean. The staff, even though they couldn't speak english, made the effort to communicate with translator, and were very friendly and helpful, and in the end even gave me a lovely gift.

The staff was very helpful and friendly. We arrived early and they let us check in anyway. We weren’t able to make it to breakfast because our daughter wasn’t feeling well, so they gave us a box of sweets to take with us when we left.

JapanThe Ryoken was amazing. The Managing Director Kobayashi Junko, was lovely and very accommodating. The food was great as they had Chinese breakfast and dinners. The managing director went above and beyond as they drove me to see the snow monkeys and drove me 30 minutes out to one of the best onsens I've been to. When I checked out they gave me a thank you gift.

United KingdomThe hotel is just 3 minutes on foot from Yudanaka JR station. Very convenient for visiting the Snow Monkey Park by bus which stops right in front of the station. The small spa village is reminiscent of the Showa era.

South AfricaDO NOT BOOK THIS ACCOMMODATION. We had to check-out within one hour of arrival it was so bad, and we lost all our money. It is a flea-infested, smelly and filthy ryokan. The smell from the bathroom attached to our bedroom was repugnant. The smell in the elevator was so bad they had to use air freshener constantly. The onsen in the basement is not fit for human use. How this’s ryokan received a good rating is questionable. It needs to be checked by the health authorities.
DO NOT BOOK THIS ACCOMMODATION. No redeeming features other than its proximity to the train station.

New ZealandWe ordered both breakfast and dinner for our stay. The dinner was very traditional Chinese (one dish we suspected to be intestines and most were quite oily and salty). Our teenage children (who happily eat unidentified sashimi and pretty much all Japanese food) struggled to eat the meal and we adults did not enjoy it either. The breakfast was much more palatable but still mainly fried Chinese rice and meat dishes. We stayed in a Japanese Ryokan the night before our stay here and for 20,000 less we had a delicious kaiseki dinner and amazing buffet breakfast so didn't feel that this one was good value for money.
The Japanese-style tatami room was lovely and spacious by Japanese standards. The views from the room towards the hills were fantastic and the host was very friendly and super helpful. The onsen is very small but we were the only ones in it at the time we used it so enjoyed it. There is no outdoor onsen, just the small indoor bath.

NetherlandsThe en-suite bathroom and toilet were okay, but felt a bit outdated, only used the onsen. Onsen temperature water was a bit on the low side and the water level of the cold bath was too low. Felt a bit outdated. Breakfast was okay, a bit monotone to my liking (same sauce used on a lot of things).
The staff is very helpful. They very kindly washed my clothes when I asked them to. The room is spacious with a nice view. Located close by the station with some nice restaurants nearby. Breakfast was brought to your room.
