Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

Italy1 night stay. Private cedarwood onsen in room, which is essentially what we came for. We relaxed and enjoyed our stay. The reception staff was kind. Dinner and breakfast felt a bit rushed as if they wanted to hurry you along. Overall, we just felt that the value for money wasn't exactly in line.

United StatesThe hotel was very old and depressing. There was mold around the indoor private bath. The price was very high and not worth it. I would Rate this hotel only 1 star. We stayed only one night and couldn’t wait to leave.
We were unable to eat the dinner was not appetizing.

ChinaI stayed in a room with a hot spring bath. The glass door of the bathroom couldn't stop the steam from coming out, it made me feel that the room is always a bit humid. The second thing is when I asked for an extra duvet I was told there'll be charge for this and they could only provide extra blankets for free. I think that was weird.
If you're driving the location is excellent. You can find what you need mostly nearby. The food is good.

JapanEven though the retro vibe can be charming, I agree with previous visitors when they said the amenities were outdated. There should be more smart TVs available in the room. Also there were quite a few bugs in the rooms. Unfortunately, what we didn’t like the most about our stay was the breakfast. Not only did it not taste as good as the dinner from the night before, it was also too light. On top of that, we didn’t like having to pick at fish bones first thing in the morning. We were hoping for more of a continental breakfast. It was a disappointing note to leave on. However, because the dinner was so good, I trust that the restaurant can come up with a better breakfast in the future.
I liked how secluded it was and that it was deep in the mountains. I also liked how we were right above a waterfall, so it was very nice to hear at night. The whole property had a retro Showa vibe to it. The shuttle car was very clean, and the staff was very warm and helpful. Moreover the autumn themed dinner (especially the snapper pie) was fantastic, and so was the ice cream available on the fifth floor. Most importantly, the onsen was very relaxing.

United KingdomVery dated. A bit out of the way. On the last the reception lady let herself down due to a misunderstanding over a taxi booking. She came across quite rude and condecending.
Very scenic and nice views… opposite a bus route which was good. Free shuttle to nearest train station was good.

CanadaWish I read it sooner - we came to Hakone to relax as we cap our stay in Japan, but there's a loud humming noise in our room that just won't stop. Fortunately we didn't have to stay in the room all day. The hotel looks dated as well - mold, masking tapes covering cracks on the floor, etc. For the price of the stay and the dinner, they could only offer tea for the drink. You'd have to buy and the drinks don't come cheap.
Kaiseki dinner was sublime. Private open air onsen in the room is also the perfect way to relax. On the first floor, they have bigger onsens anyone could reserve, and they also serve free drinks there. Staff was helpful and gave recommendations on how to get around the area, which particular sites to visit and how to make the most of our stay.

AustraliaThe hotel really needs a deep clean, the onsens are very dirty sadly. The glass and bathroom in our private room was very very dirty and the onsen tap had a growth of some capacity on it. Overall the hotel should do a massive deep clean overhaul
Our room was very large and spacious and the staff were very lovely.

United KingdomThe room needed updating - there were patches of masking tape covering gaps in the floor for example. We experienced a loud humming noise in our room the duration of the trip that couldn't be fixed; despite the staff being super helpful. We were in room 47. Disappointing only water or oolong tea was included in the price with meals; we had to pay 800yen for a beer with the meal given we'd paid so much to stay to begin with. The breakfast was a unique experience (fish and rice) which was nice to try but not our cup of tea as Westerners! Still amazingly presented
The staff were lovely and the concept of a private onsen in your room was great for a special occasion (we were on our Honeymoon); we also didn't struggle to use any of the "shared" private onsen (there are three you turn up and lock the door and it is yours for 45 mins). These were slightly bigger than the private onsen hence why we used both. The food was an experience! If you enjoy sashimi / raw fish you will love it. I have attached pictures of the menu both nights we stayed; night two menu was much preferred.

Japan(1) Even though the web site states that if you call when you arrive at Kowakidani station, a shuttle will be there to pick you up, they were not available after 2-30 minutes of calling. (2) The biggest problem is the hot spring. The hot spring analysis report says that the temperature is 40-42 degrees Celsius, but when we actually measured the temperature with a thermometer, it was over 45 degrees Celsius. They do not consider the risk of heat shock at all. (3) The sauna in the main bath has a floorboard that has come off, and it is very dangerous to enter the sauna with bare feet. (4) The facilities are quite old, and the wallpaper is peeling and dusty.

United KingdomOn busy steep road . No pavement for some way. Very strange atmosphere. Didn’t seem to be any regular staff .We only saw two guests. Deserted. No breakfast facilities and no shops nearby. The listing did say this and we did take our own food. Restaurant was closed and was not taking any bookings for meals. However they said it was fully booked. When we went to look at it there was no evidence of anyone being there.
