Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

SingaporeThe room assigned to us is the WORST ROOM in the ryokan. 1. It is just beside the alley where tourists would drag their luggage on their way to their lodging 2. The room is poorly insulated and with temperature on high single or low double digit’s it’s pretty cold 3. The room is NOT CLEANED DAILY, only on the 4th day of your stay 4. The room is near the washing machine that crank out a loud noise every time it’s being used 5. The sewage pipes from the toilet upstairs make a lot of noise when it’s being used
Nothing to like about this property especially the room we were provided.

SerbiaThe staff were nice. The place is nice, but I didn't know that there would be heating only via air conditioning so we always came back to a cold room after a long day out. It was really clean, and futon was comfortable. The building is old and traditional so You have to watch out to not make any noise, but we didn't have a problem with the neighbours. The location is rather far from main turist attractions, but there is a metro station 8min away and the main station 20min away.

ThailandThis kind of accommodation supposed to be a "old style Japanese experience" but everything was fully automated like all other accommodation in Japan. A ryokan should show more human interaction including breakfast or a tea/coffee place but we did not see anybody anywhere in the empty space.
For ryokan everything was according to what can be expected

SpainNothing really negative. If you book the traditional rooms you will find the check-in area in a nearby building (40 seconds away, just round the corner): is this a negative feature? Not really…
This was our second time in Kyoto and we didn’t think twice before booking this Ryokan: the traditional room of the upper floor is very warm and cosy, with a complete kitchenette at our disposal. Everything is always pristine clean and the staff available for any need

United StatesRoom faced a poking to for buses and staff.
The room and bathroom were fine. I wish I hd chosen a room facing the sea rather than the parking lot. It might have been a little bit more but waking to the bay would have been a perk. The dinning experience was exceptionable. The staff of the dinning room were attentive, and helpful. The food was a delight. I took advantage of there onset, it was clean and the water was perfect.

United KingdomRoom size is small, when the futon were open there was no extra space.
Central location, not far from the main station; traditional building, tatami mats and futon. Reasonably comfortable and convenient base for exploring Kyoto.

United KingdomThe location wasn't great. It is labelled as good location but I disagree. I suppose everyone's tolerance of what is close differs but as a disabled person with a lot of heavy luggage, I didn't think it was good. I class walking distance as 15 mins and nothing was within walking distance. We used taxis a lot and the buses (which were confusing) but unfortunately I wouldn't stay here again as even though I love the property, I can't recommend the location. I also had to cancel one night and didn't receive any refund. Whilst I understand with short notice they lose money, there are a lot of places where you can receive a refund even up to the day of check in so it was just something which let it down in comparison.
The place looks better than in the photos. To be honest I was dreading the stay because in Tokyo I had stayed on a Tatami floor and it was awful. The pad they laid out did nothing and I slept poorly. This was absolutely not the case here though. The pads provided are very comfortable and I slept very well. The place is SO cozy. It was pouring it down and I was happy to stay in and listen to the rain. All in all it was just very comfortable and ambient. Facilities were good - plenty of umbrellAs and a hair dryer was appreciated. Staff very nice.

United StatesInterior walls were thin so you could people in the room snoring. Bathrooms were somewhat cramped, but that was expected. It’s too bad that the restaurant wasn’t fully active.
Restaurant, for daily breakfast, was excellent. Likewise, the staff was friendly and very helpful. Location was great. The history of the property added charm.

United StatesIf we had stayed more than a night I might have found the futon/floor too uncomfortable but my husband was fine!
We liked the authentic atmosphere, the easy to access location, the cute guide book in English they provided, and everything overall. The powerful AC in the summer was wonderful. Because we slept on futon we had more room to sleep than some hotels we'd stayed at in other parts of Japan. We had a private room with its own bathroom and honestly the fact they were able to fit the bathroom in such a tight space was impressive! We only stayed one night and weren't charged for towels so I think I misunderstood other reviews - they charge you to switch out your towels not just for a basic set of towels. check in and check out were wonderfully easy.
