Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United StatesThe location was hard to walk to unless you are okay with walking on the side of the road. I ended up getting a taxi from the bus stop.
The hotel was amazing and breakfast was good. The public bath was very clean and easy to understand for first timers.

United StatesThe two restaurant menus did not have much food options or options for vegetarians. As, there were no restaurant options near by then hotel, the restaurants at the hotel were the only option for dinner and they were expensive.
The location and the garden were beautiful! The hotel was clean and well maintained.

Hong KongOverall none.
Location is just perfect and facing Lake Ashi. The landscape is beautiful. Staff are helpful. Room is big which is good for two people. Nice view of Lake. WiFi works good. The onsen is not big but it’s good. The property is a heritage building and everything is clean and nice. Wanted to dine in the French restaurant but it was full😢 Will try next trip. It was raining in the day we left and snowed the night before. My car was covered with snow and I was removing the snow, a staff came to me and gave me a wipe for doing my job. Thanks for his coming and saved me some energy ☺️

United StatesSince the shuttles only run 9am-5pm, it is a little tricker to get around if you are leaving outside of these hours. Hakone Free Pass made travel around the area and to/from the hotel easier tho.
Onsen was beautiful and clean. Went during March and pretty much had it to myself 2 of the 3 times I went. Breakfast was good. Japanese breakfast had some interesting things I never tried. I loved the free coffee in the lounge every morning since I can't start my day without it. It tasted quite good/strong and not the typical watered down hotel coffee. The staff was excecptional and the shuttle service was alway on time.

United StatesNothing to note.
The view was good though toward the town vs toward Mt. Fuji. The Onsen looked inviting though we did not have time to use it. The Observatory view was excellent and clean. Breakfast at Vert Bois was exceptional, the orange juice was literally remarkable.

United StatesThe rooms are a bit outdated, the carpet need replacement. But in general rooms are large and well appointed, quite confortable indeed.
Great aged distinguished hotel. The rooms are spacious with beautiful views of Hakone. There is a very reliable shuttle service . The restaurants are high end , very gourmet and there is a choice; western food (French) and traditional Japanese

United StatesDated rooms, inability to enjoy drinks with a view of Mount Fuji on the patio
Very nice indoor and outdoor onsen, but unfortunately some of the guests were quite loud and not respectful of onsen etiquette. The room was a bit dated, as others have mentioned, but it was comfortable. We particularly enjoyed the garden and the view of Mount Fuji from the hotel and we had a wonderful dinner at the French restaurant featuring local and seasonal produce with lovely French and Japanese wine pairings - a bit pricy but high quality. Staff at the hotel were warm and welcoming, with the exception of the bar, which unfortunately did not allow for drinks to be enjoined on the patio with a view to Fuji and generally did not feel very welcoming or cozy- this is a missed opportunity. Also, especially after the lovely dinner, breakfast seemed sad and was lacking in options and quality - we had the French breakfast so I can’t speak to the Japanese breakfast. I would be remiss not to mention the amazing spa staff and nurturing treatments we had there- the most expensive of our trip- but worth the splurge. If you do stay here I would recommend doing it correctly and enjoying the spa and French restaurant during your stay.

Hong KongThe French dinner was good but probably the weakest link in our experience.
Location is great - minutes of walk to the waterfront tori and superb for launching a drone. The garden is wonderfully designed and well manicured, perfect backdrop for an authentic Japanese breakfast. The outdoor onsen was also a nice experience.

United KingdomI think the value for money wasn't the best, it's a nice place but not quite worth what we paid. The clientele are pretty high brow, I maybe felt a little out of place not being more dressed up for dinner. The decor throughout is pretty dated, I think it maybe hasn't been updated since the place was renovated in the 70s although I'm speculating a little. But I noticed that the carpet on the 1st floor by the elevators was especially stained. I think for a place this expensive they should either be deep cleaning or if that doesn't work then replacing the carpet. It really detracts from the vibe. Something else a bit odd was that the bar closed very early. We had one cocktail after dinner and were about to get another at about half 8 only to realise we were already too late. Bars in Japanese hotels are a bit of a rarity so it was quite frustrating that when I finally had access to one it closed so early. Finally, not against the hotel, and maybe I should have already realised this but Hakone is incredibly tourist centric. There really isn't much else to it. If I'd realised the extent of just how touristy Hakone is, I don't think I would have gone, so just be aware.
The dinner and breakfast included were both very tasty, we had the French options both times. The view over the lake and of Fuji in good weather from the observation tower were very impressive.

United StatesIt would be helpful if shuttles could start early like 5am so guests don't need to pay for a taxi. Everything at this hotel is marvelous. I highly recommend this hotel.
Thew view was gorgeous. You can go on the roof floor and see mt Fuji and the lake very clearly. I got a massage and facial that really cheered me up.
