Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

Our stay at Yamanoo Ryokan in Kanazawa was nothing short of enchanting. Tucked away above the historic Higashi Old Town, this ryokan offers a rare blend of tradition and tranquillity. The private onsen, overlooking the timeless streets below, provided a uniquely serene and rejuvenating escape—an experience we’ll cherish. From our arrival, the hosts treated us like family, with a level of warmth and attentiveness that truly set the tone for our visit. The room was thoughtfully designed, merging classic Japanese elegance with modern comforts, making it a perfect retreat. But the real highlight was the kaiseki dining experience—each dish was a miniature work of art, reflecting the seasons and embodying local flavours in a way that was both beautifully authentic and innovative. The breakfast was equally exceptional, each course balancing subtlety with deliciousness. Every moment at Yamanoo was thoughtfully curated, from the gracious hospitality to the pristine facilities, making it a place we’d wholeheartedly recommend to anyone looking to immerse themselves in Kanazawa’s rich heritage with a touch of luxury. This ryokan is not just a place to stay; it’s an experience that resonates long after you’ve left.

United StatesIt was a very unusual stay in a good way and had the feel of what I imagined a Japanese ryokan experience would be. The rooms were beautiful and elegant. I felt very pampered. The food was amazing and so well presented. The location is right by the old Higashi Chaya geisha district.

United StatesThis ryokan is up a very steep hill and there are a lot of stairs to navigate.
This is a very small, traditional ryokan. The rooms are in individual units clustered around an attractive garden. The rooms have been beautifully renovated. Meals, which are served in the main building, are outstanding.

United StatesI took a star away because of the dinner, which was easily the worst meal I have had in Japan. It is an attempt at fine dining that is a little too extra. The dinner was 8 rounds dishes that were mostly distasteful, bland, or otherwise gross. For example, one of the dishes was a ball of shrimp in a bowl of green pea soup. Another dish was fish tempura, but here’s the kicker, the fish wasn’t cleaned. My wife bit into the fish and but into the heart and guts, and was close to throwing up right there. She had to spit it out into a napkin. The worst destruction of a dish that could have even amazing was their wagyu. Wagyu is not a difficult dish to create. Grill it for a short time, maybe a little bit of a char, and a small amount of salt and it will melt in your mouth. But no, what did the chef do? He steamed the wagyu until it was soggy and flaccid and then placed it in a bowl filled with tomato juice and diced tomatoes. We were instructed to eat the meat together with the diced tomatoes and it was utterly disappointing. 9/10 for the location and venue. 1/10 for the dinner. Whoever created the dinner menu needs to be taken to the back and beaten with a bamboo stick.
Wonderful Ryokan experience with a fantastic view. The wooden, very deep bathtub, was one of the best bathing experiences I’ve ever had.

AustraliaThis was a gorgeous experience. The food was a little wild, lots of raw fish, even jelly fish, we gave everything a go. Perhaps breakfast could have been a little more conventical, or maybe a ramen rather than more raw fish. Just eggs would have been great.

Great beautiful room with the most traditional tatami, peaks over the old town of Kanazawa. We were blessed to bath over the sunset our first night! The food (dinner and breakfast) was amazing!!! One of the best we have had in a long time. The chef really values on season local materials. Every dish was done at such a humble way but extremely high standard. They also cater to dietary requirements with advance notice.
