Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United StatesNothing.
Beautiful temple, words cannot properly express the experience. Truly a mystical feeling being there, staff was very helpful and kind. The morning meditation was excellent, food was high quality, and the room was very nice and traditional. Location is also very convenient right next to two large temple complexes. We especially enjoyed being able to walk right across the street to the Danjō-garan complex which is lit up at night and can be explored for free at any time (small fee to enter the large temples during the day.)

AustraliaIt was rather cold in winter. However, the futon was very warm at night which made up for it.
The staff were lovely, the food was excellent, the room was clean and the morning prayers were a very interesting experience.

United KingdomOne of the best, if not the best, Temple Lodgings in Koya-San. Impeccable hospitality, Michelin Star quality food. Stunning grounds and accommodation. Staff are of the highest quality. They have an Onsen on site. The morning ceremony is an amazing experience. Great location. Easy access for transportation. Mini mart just around the corner. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

ItalySleeping in a ryokan traditional floor bed is not great for comfort, but it is a unique experience. In the winter with below zero temperature, the absolutely necessary use of air conditioner to keep the room warm, made it a bit noisy.
This is a unique location and structure. The mail reason to go is not what you’d usually chose. The opportunity to participate to the ceremony in the early morning is exceptional. The food is prepared with extremem care and it is abundant and ery good, more like a Michelin star restaurant than a monestary. A great experience

United StatesWe were there in January when it's very cold and it took a while for the room temperature to warm up.
The location was great and we had a suite that had a beautiful view. The food was terrific and we enjoyed the morning ceremony.

New ZealandBe sure to arrive as early as permitted. We felt pushed for time as there is a curfew of 9pm. As soon as we arrived it was almost time for dinner and so our only chance to see Okunoin Cemetery was at night, although we felt we did not have enough time for this as we had to be back at the accomodation by 9pm. If you attend the morning prayer at 6am, be sure to dress very warmly (in winter). Although it is held inside, the room was quite cold and I wished I wore a warmer jacket. It would have been perfect to go for a hot soak in the onsen after this but unfortunately it is only open in the afternoons.
The hosts (Buddhist monks) greeted us at the door and provided us green tea and cake while they prepared our check-in details. Our room was spacious, clean, and had its own bathroom. The shared bathing facilities were excellent and spacious, and perfect after walking around Koyasan. The dinner and breakfast are excellent. Make sure you are hungry for dinner (perhaps skip lunch!) as it is served at 5:30pm and is a very large meal. Breakfast was slightly lighter.

United StatesDinner was lovely. Breakfast was not overly satiating. Bedding was basic and uncomfortable (this wasn't entirely unexpected). Stipulations on allowable showering times was inconvenient for our travel plans and communal showers with no privacy, not ideal.
This stay was a little challenging as we felt like it was an expensive experience, that didn't necessarily meet our expectations.

AustraliaI did not like the fact that the public bath is only open from 3 pm until 10 pm. While there is a sink and toilet in the guest rooms, I would like to have bathed in the morning before leaving and having a long day of traveling ahead. Also, make sure you have cash on hand if buying a drink to have with dinner as it is not added to your bill for payment at checkout.
The vegetarian menu was delicious and filling. The room was clean and tidy and as expected for traditional-style Japanese accommodation. Most staff were courteous and obliging.

MauritiusSojiin is well situated in Koyasan and the temple complex is very interesting. The morning ceremony was most enjoyable - especially the personal talk by the chief priest. The room were spartan, as expected, but the food was excellent. Hard to justify the $500 per night price, though.

GermanyWe came by bus from Kyoto. Arrived at Sojin at 11 a.m. in strongly pouring rain, completely wet. Rain continued for the rest of the day. It came as a negative surprise that we were simply told to come back at 15:00. I fully understand that we couldn’t check in early. But I have zero understanding that a family with a kid is not invited in to get warm and drink a cup of coffee/tea for a brief moment. I would expect more decency from people at a monastery. Let alone that their prices are quite steep. In addition, you get very little information about the monastery, only some translated words after the morning prayer.
Dinner and breakfast was amazing. Location good. Hot bath pleasant.
