Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United StatesThe host at Sumiyoshiya Ryokan was very welcoming and helpful. We arrived before check-in, but she let us enter our room early. We unfortunately weren't able to have dinner at the Ryokan due to the chef developing a serious illness, but we were notified ahead of time about this and refunded the value of dinner. We hope that he recovers soon! Additionally, our host more than made up for this by providing us with excellent restaurant recommendations. The best sushi we had in Japan was at one of the restaurants she suggested. The traditional Japanese style breakfast was also quite delicious and substantial. We wished we could have stayed longer than 1 night and we will definitely try to stay here when we return to Kanazawa!

United KingdomThe hostess was very welcoming. The home cooked breakfast was delicious and it was a great experience to try such an elaborate traditional Japanese breakfast. The room was really big and the private bathroom was clean and comfortable. There was also a little common area to read and relax in, as well as a public bath. Yukata, slippers, etc are provided. I cannot recommend this place enough. It is a family-run business and the attention to detail is evident. There is a cozy atmosphere that you will only find in this type of inn. It was exactly what we needed after being out in the snow.

NetherlandsWe had the privilege of staying in this 300 years family run Kanazawa’s oldest Ryokan. Everything was extraordinary! We’re just thankful for their hospitality and smiling faces 🙏 I would come to Kanazawa just for this Ryokan. Do not miss the breakfast! Do not miss the onsen. Strongly recommended!

CanadaI wish there is a kettle in the room, the tea is not enough so I felt thirsty in the night. But not a big deal.
This is my first ever ryokan experience and I loved it. This property itself is a historical site so if you are an architectural nerd you will enjoy exploring it. Staff are so nice and the breakfasts were great. I regret didn’t book their dinner in advance. There are two public onsens for women and men. The onsen is pretty small, about 1.5x size of Canada common bathtub. But during my 2 days of stay, I didn’t need to share it anyone. I felt like the mordenization/renovation of this ryokan is done in Showa period, so it’s has a nostalgic feelings on top of an even more nostalgic feeling, which was very interesting. It changed my mood completely that even affect my itineraries. Every day you get a new set of yukata, I like how it feels. I can’t say enough good things about them. High recommend.

AustraliaI’m not one to normally write a review but my stay here has been excellent. The staff were lovely and spoke decent English, I also arrived drenched and she quickly invited me in and led me to my room to blast the heater. She also aired out my shoes while I was chilling in my bed which was much appreciated after walking around in them for the past 3 weeks. Great overall experience I’d say.

United StatesWonderful caring host. Large room with a beautiful window area to sit and enjoy the quaint garden outside of it. My host made me feel absolutely taken care of as if I was family. I loved the traditional space and everything was clean and fresh. I spent more time just chilling in the hotel than I'd like to admit because it was just so cozy.

Straight 10: the hostess is absolutely fantastic ans actively helped our stay into a success by helping us get travel arrangements fixed. The atmosphere is stunning, beautiful ryokan style rooms, great food, very good location next to the market and the castle, and just overall a very easy 10. And this is the 9th generation running it! Amazing. Nothing to remark.

United KingdomSumiyoshiya was one of highlighted stays of my recent trip to Japan, and remains memorable even amongst our other stays in Hakone. The ryokan is located quite conveniently right beside Omicho Market, and a brisk walk to Kazuemachi/Higashi Chaya, and Kenroku-en. Walking into the reception imbues you with a sense of serenity. We were greeted by a gorgeous 床の間 (tokonoma) and Sumi-san, whom was courteous and polite from the moment we first arrived at the inn. Our room was spacious and came with its own bath, but we opted for the public gendered baths anyway. It was a quiet season, hence we both had each to ourselves at night. Breakfast was satiating with well grilled salmon, a sunny-side up, various tsukemono, vegetables and melon for a sweet finish. All in all, I could not imagine a better place to stay in Kanazawa if you're after a traditional ryokan.
