Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesThe location is a bit far from the transportation hub in Hakone.
Wonderful staff. A young group that spoke excellent English. Downstairs is a DELICIOUS hamburger restaurant with great onion rings and fries. The rooms were comfortable . We had the entire house to ourselves after the restaurant closed. The house is a bit outdated but it was nostalgic and authentic.

MalaysiaThe cute design and accommodating staff. He spoke fluent English and super helpful in getting us settled in during our stay. They allowed us to check in early and we are thankful they gave us space to perform prayers before we left the accommodation. We will treasure our precious memories in Hakone, thanks to Hakonowa and their staff. Highly recommended to stay here and have a good meal downstairs at the restaurant. We requested for vegan and the burger is delicious!! Best meal in Hakone.

United StatesThe staff was extremely welcoming and they bring food to your room. If you order it downstairs, you have to be quiet because it is an old building but it is extremely charming and comfortable. I really liked the teeny tiny Hot springs for couples that you can reserve for all hour

United KingdomRecommend that the staff use WD40 to rid of the creaking sound of the doors at least when the old wooden floors understandably do.

SwedenThe only thing was the thin walls, but we were prepared for that and it didn't bother us much at all.
We arrived and was immidiately greeted by the friendly staff. After checking in we changed into yukata and went downstairs to enjoy a delicious burger dinner in a traditional japanese setting, something quite special! The onsen was easily booked and me and my partner could bathe together as it is booked by room for an hour slot at a time. It is also tattoo friendly. I would absolutely stay here again!

HungaryI was not very comfortable with check-in call via tablet, it is a bit weird to show my face and passport to an unknown person. I would rather check-in electronically via app.
The location is very picturesque, the house looks beautiful outside and inside. The room is elegant, the bed is super comfortable. I liked the experience of private onsen, it is very suitable for couples. The breakfast offer is really nice, tea & coffee tastes excellent.

GermanyIt was pretty cold in the room in the middle of December. But that is something that you know beforehand when you chose this time for your stay.
Where should I start. It is just the perfect place to stay when you’re in Hakone. The staff is exceptional, the house is beautiful with traditional arranged rooms and there is even a private Onsen in the basement. On the first floor there is a small restaurant where you can get delicious burgers and homemade lemonade. I loved every second of my stay!

AustraliaThe double room was extremely small. The two of us had trouble opening our suitcases in the room (actually on the bed) as there is no space to on the floor. Breakfast is supplied in the room, but had trouble eating it on supplied tray due to space, however they do offer free use of the restaurant space downstairs until 10am. We also had trouble with mosquitoes if we left the window (with screen) slightly ajar, we had to close the window and had no fresh air.
Staff was excellent, the bed was amazing and the light breakfast supplied was nice. Onsen was a great spot to relax after a big day, this is your only shower though snd you need to share it with others using a room name system.

JapanWanted to get in touch with the reception team before check-out but the reception team is only available from 11:30am onwards. Note that if you do book last minute, would be ideal to check-in to the hotel when there's staff around so you can check with them for anything if not, it is really unmanned.
Location was great. Only three rooms so it feels cosy. Straightforward check-in process. Very very very nice room. Slept well. There are some games provided as well in the room if you want to play with friends. Amenities were well-provided. Instructions printed in English were clear. The manager was very nice, when I ran into her.

HungaryCheck in was a bit difficult as we arrived after the restaurant closed. The bathroom / onsen area was small and had mold. If you want to have a good onsen experience it’s worth to book a private room in a nearby spa.
Staying in this house is like time travel. You can get a sense of how Japanese people lived 100 years ago. Our room was clean and comfortable, the hosts were really kind. The breakfast was really delicious and we had a great sleep hearing the sound of the nearby creek.
