Real Bookers. Real stays. Real opinions.
Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

PortugalIt's a quiet neighborhood so everything closes super early. Not that this is the hostel's fault but it was a bit difficult to find somewhere to have dinner after 9pm.
It's a really old building so it has that asian houses vibe. Location was also perfect but only during the day. Super clean, quiet and pleasant. Staff was super helpful.

South KoreaThere were some difficult points of hostel. Like the old type of hostel it calls dadami was so cold that we couldn't endure the cold without heat mat. The gas heat smelled worse that we didn't use that.
The location is incomparable with other, because I want to go morning market at 9am. It was so close that it took just 3mins.

United KingdomPaper walls (as expected in machiya tea house) but also large gaps between the walls so there really is no soundproofing. A loud child was in the room next to us - take earplugs!! But the hostel did warn of this so fair enough.
Nice riverside setting, right near the morning market and main area. 10mins walk from train/bus station. Good value.

AustraliaThe rooms had a bad smell to them as did the bath towels. Walls are paper thin (as to be expected) and we could hear a gentleman snoring throughout the night next door. We thought it was pretty funny but something to keep in mind.
It was clean and the beds were very comfortable. Great location. Just over 1km to train and bus stop, I think.

LatviaEvery room is located on the 2nd floor, and the showers are on the ground floor which makes it a bit uncomfortable. In the room where we stayed, there were no hangers, table, sofa or even shelves so we needed to put everything on the ground.
The location, the toster in the kitchen, discount to onsen, friendly staff

JapanThe male staff member seemed uninterested in his work and more concerned about his work on the laptop. He mentioned he was new, but no sense of hospitality whatsoever.
The location was convenient.

United KingdomThere was quite a bit of dust on my bed frame: a little on the shelf next to my head and a decent layer on the rail around the top of my bed. Also, the showers and sinks are quite far from the dormitory.
Great location, well organised. It had a space downstairs to chill and socialise and provided access to the other branch of this hostel chain, also in Takayama.

Singapore- shower is on the first floor while dorms are on the second floor, it was a struggle carrying all my soaps and clothes. only three showers total (though i never had to wait) - smells dank at the entrance, hostel looks a little worn in general. the towel they provided smelled err sweaty - they do not make the bed for you, you have to put the sheet urself and its so difficult to do that on the top bunk especially aft ur commute you would be fumbling around - had a sh*tty experience with other guests being noisy at 4am that i had to say "shhhh" twice in my half awakened state, nosiness was never an issue with other hostels i stayed in in japan... - lacking in security, people can just easily enter the hostel and dorms (especially since the reception was always empty)
+ sleeping area was cozy, pillow and bed are comfortable, thick duvet, cool aircon (must for summer) + central location, 12min walk from takayama station which is where you would arrive/leave if u take bus or train. by the miyagawa river. has plenty of food options and izakayas nearby + has luggage storage

IsraelYou only get a very small towel when you check in.
The hostel is a walking distance from virtually everywhere in town - the morning markets, the old town, the park and the train/ bus station. The bed was comfortable and the outside light didn't bother at all thanks to the curtains. All the staff members I met were native English speakers so no problem with communication, and they were also very kind and helpful.
