Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

SingaporeWhile I know the gachapon machines don't belong to them, would be nice if they warned us if the machine is faulty or sold out.
They gave a good description as to the hot springs we were using and they were well maintained. Most of the food was explained on a card in English.

Great ryokan in the Hakone area. Very close to a bus stop. There is a family mart close by with a great selection of foods & items. The dinner and breakfast provided are exceptional, so many items that can fill your stomach. The service and facilities in this place are also very satisfying. The private bath in your room is very convenient.

CanadaOverall very disappointing indeed. Our room was not clean, which was a shock, but the staff put that right (eventually), with a discount for the error. The room description was "mountain view". There was no view *at all* from the room itself, and from the private onsen, the view was of a slope just a few metres from the window and some sort of noisy, ugly heating/cooling/generator facility. To describe it as a "mountain view" is completely misleading. The room and hallways were extremely dark and bare of any artwork or decor to give it interest or warmth. Location was good - bus stop a minute walk away and ten minutes to Togendai .The food was very good traditional Japanese fare. Overall, it was very expensive for the property and room. We paid a very similar price for a beautiful, light, airy tatami room with a spectacular lake view in Kawaguchiko, so this was a huge let-down.

United StatesVery expensive but room was the worst my family has stayed in. Room smells the second you walk in, blankets and sheets were very stained, bugs everywhere, bathroom is very small.
Food was pretty good, big meals with lots of courses. Staff was nice as well and free drinks (including alcoholic) in the lobby.

AustraliaOur room was uncomfortable. There was nowhere to sit comfortably, and the mattresses were the worst we have slept on all trip. I am pregnant and I was extremely sore and uncomfortable. It didn't feel like we could rest. It was also weird that we booked for three people, but only two beds had been set up. It was one of the more expensive properties we booked so we were quite surprised we had to set up our own bed. The food was tricky, I had told them I was pregnant in advance and that I was not allowed seafood or raw food. They said they would cater for this, but despite telling me at meal times I had special food, I started to eat and still found things like uncooked seafood, fish eggs etc in my meal. This was upsetting as I felt I couldn't trust that I could eat safe foods for pregnancy despite speaking up in advance.
The ambience of the property was nice, and the location was quiet and away from the touristy area, but well serviced by buses. Some of the included food was good. Staff were friendly but didn't speak much English. Fairly clean overall.

United KingdomHidden charges that should have been more clear when booking: children's fees, tax When booking for children under 6, you can either book them as adults or not at all. For a half-board, this makes no sense as a 4-year-old still needs to eat and a towel to shower, even if they are sleeping in the same bed as the adult.
A very immersive experience into the Japanese Ryokan style. We liked the private onsen. The staff at the restaurant were very friendly and polite.

United KingdomThis didn’t to us have the feel or experience of a ryokan. It was just like staying in an average hotel. There was nothing special about it.
The ryokan is quiet and well located to a nearby bus stop and close to Lake Ashi (which bus trip).

Australia- location of the hotel is fairly deep into the mountains, takes about 30 minutes from Hakone Yumoto station via bus (no train is available) - shower is a bit small - food gets repetitive after a day, no meat, only fish - few restaurants around that actually open
- specious room, large tatami, large couch - two types of onsens, and not overly crowded - complementary drinks after bath - microwave is available on premise - family mart is next door

AustraliaFar from the city centre/train/attractions and no shuttle. It costs about $50 each way in a taxi… if you can find one. Staff don’t speak English and don’t really even try to communicate. Included breakfast was overrated - glad we didn’t pay for dinner. Room is very bright at night with led lights from the smoke alarms.
If you’re an onsen person, there is an onsen inside the room in addition to the public bath. There is a 24-hour convenience store close by. Room is a good mix of Japanese and western.
