Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomThe location is hard to get to without a car and with luggage is a real pain to get up and down the mountain/hill. The closest convenience store is 1.5km away and that is quite challenging if walking up the hill again. The host can be extremely rude sometimes and doesn’t have any safety precautions like an extra key, reception or any sort of formality.
It gets the job done if your only using this property to sleep and spend most of your day outside

United StatesYears of living in Japan and this is the worst accommodation I have seen! Starting with the worst of the problems, there were cockroaches in a traditional Japanese room where you are sleeping on the tatami floor (there was just a mattress on the floor and not futon, but I wouldn't trust either here to be clean). The room smelled of urine and the AC wouldn't cool and kept even turning the fan off, when there was a heat advisory. (The manager seemed to know this when she let me into the room, since she said that she couldn't get anyone to work on it, but still turned it on as if eventually the room would get cooler.) With all this there was no staff around and there was no after hours number to get any assistance with these problems. It was so bad I left in the middle of the first night when I had paid for three. I told the manager I was leaving and all of the reasons why and she didn't offer any assistance or refund, even for the nights I wasn't going to use. She left me several strange voicemails saying that there weren't any problems. Before I even arrived within minutes of booking the room I was contacted to say that the room that I booked was very small without a window or AC. Since it was non- refundable the manager said I had to contact Booking to book a decent room for more than double the price. (The manager also said that I should have known the room was bad because of the price). In addition to all of this it was very difficult to find, but that is probably for the best so that everyone can avoid it. I told Booking about all of these problems and they refunded their portion of my price, but I never heard anything from the property. Save yourself the hassle and book a nice place in Hakone. There are many, but this isn't one of them. (The photo is of one of the largest spiders I have ever seen, which was in the hotel. Small table next to it for size reference).
I booked it because it was in Hakone near my friends' hotels. Stay at another hotel. Do not stay here!

United KingdomHad my bags stolen and held at ransom until I paid a late checkout fee. The only reason I didn’t return my key on time was because I couldn’t define a staff member to give it to. AC was broken. Onsen requires you to reserve a time, had to wait 5 hours to use it.

SpainI was a solo traveller and booked a room for myself. It was quite cheap 167€ for three nights. Even so there was no window (i was warned about that). The bathroom is shared, the onsen is available by reservation and it’s VERY run down (pipes with tape on, building material around, etc) one time the water was so so hot it was physically impossible to get in (I can get in very hot water normally) and another time it was luke warm. Soooo… i wouldnt recommend even if you pay more for a nicer room the onsen just isnt worth it in my opinion. Also other parts of the facility feel old and are broken like the automatic front doors that you have to manually pull open.
I liked how close it was to the cablecar to get to the station to be able to go around hakone. I also liked the owner. She was very helpfull and friendly.

United KingdomThe room was really spacious and comfy, and it was great to have a private onsen! It was a bit too hot for me but I could still enjoy the warmth of the room. We didn’t have any problem accessing the hotel but we did ask doorway and cable car timetables beforehand so that we didn’t miss the last one. Overall very relaxing, clean and comfortable!

AustraliaHonestly nothing - a truly authentic experience!
This was a real gem - right from the off, Tammy was incredibly helpful, responsive and genuinely welcoming. Tammy provided immediate advice about guidance from the train station, and welcomed me in right away - I was in the comfortable and awesome Onsen within an hour of arriving! Highly recommended, and as a ryokan it was stunning. Really beautiful location, attention to detail, and Onsen as well. Truly special and I had the best time!

AustraliaUnfortunately, like most traditional Japanese houses, the walls are quite thin. This meant that I was awoken at night by my neighbours loud phone call. This isn't the fault of the Ryokan staff, however I think it would be a good idea to leave a small poster in each room to remind guests to keep their noise down at night. Other than the phone call, the area around the Ryokan is entirely silent at night I also think it would be helpful if the staff left a kettle out in the entrance room.
10/10 The price is very fair considering its amazing location! Sounzan station and the open air museum are both very close. The staff spoke English well and they were so helpful and friendly. This is a traditional Ryokan which means that I slept on a small mattress on a tatami floor (which was very comfortable). The room also had a fan, with an option for silent mode and a dimmable light. Best of all, I was allotted a 50 minute timeslot with the private Onsen Overall, this Ryokan has been one of the highlights of my trip! I will definitely be returning for a longer stay in the future :)

SingaporeWe asked for an electric kettle, but were told we couldn't boil water in the room as it will cause the electrical supply to trip! The air-conditioner was disabled for the same reason. There's an unpleasant odour in the onsen, and it appears it has not been cleaned for a while!
The facility does not cater for breakfast. The location is good as it is within 5 minutes walk from the nearest train station.

JapanOne of the worst places I have ever stayed. The owner arrogant lady charged double the price in money without even giving a bill. I paid the charges from booking. Com and the owner lady forced us to cancel the booking and pay the extra money. Since the booking. Com takes some brokerage charges. I was waiting outside till midnight with a baby in my hand. The owner lady is shouting and using some harsh words like “you have money to eat but you can’t pay, you are a liar, dog and thief and all sort of nonsense. She is literally yelling at my baby and me”. Don’t believe the good rating. It’s a one hell. This lady is not Japanese, very heartless and arrogant barking lady. STAY AWAY. Check the pictures how she messaged me.
