Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

JapanThe only available rooms on booking.com were a small double and a single (family of 3), but it seems like if we had asked closer to the booking date we would have been able to get a group room big enough for the 3 of us. My mom has a bad knee so I also should have checked for a lower floor room, we were on the third floo r.
The owner was very kind and even offered to drive us to the nearby restaurant. My parents loved the private onsen, one of the highlight of their visit.

JapanWith the advertisement bout the room with a garden view. Well, it’s not that really bad but I kinda feel it’s a false advertisement cause there was no garden at all cause the main window is the garage/ main entrance of the building although I commend the view of the mountain up ahead is a good one but not really striking, the 2nd window is next to another hotel so not really a view and you gotta keep it close for privacy It is not something I’m bothered bout .. its prolly a translation error
I love the distance of the hotel and the cable car it was very near so it’s a good one, also I love the idea that the owner is allowing us to book for a PRIVATE ONSEN ahead of time once you checked-in in the hotel which is a great deal for foreigners

United KingdomCompletely my fault, but I had not realised there was no private bathroom. In the event this did not matter as there were not many in the hotel, so the shared facilities were like our own!
The location, and the peace it offered, a true oasis. The host was great, very attentive and caring. It would be good to include in the booking information a guide to finding the hotel, essentially take the cable car to the penultimate stop, get off on the right hand side and walk up the hill to the first building on the right. Dead easy when you know!

United Kingdom4 stops up the ropeway (really a funicular) which stops about 7pm. Limited food options nearby and it is a long steep climb (150m+) up from Gora.
Lady owner speaks good English and is helpful. The onsen was lovely. The room was spacious with great views. The bed was on the floor (tatami mats) but there was a seating area by the window. You can leave luggage downstairs either before or after you check in/out. Green tea in the room. .

United StatesIt's been awhile since I stayed in a place without a bathroom in the room, but it was actually ok.
Tammie the manager was friendly and helpful. The location is lovely but is isolated with limited options for food. My friend and I decided to have nice lunches out and bring food back for dinner and breakfast (the room had a small refrigerator and tea kettle, and the lobby has a microwave and a small selection of snacks, dry soup and drinks). IF YOU TAKE THE CABLE CAR UP, BE SURE TO GET OFF AT KAMI-GORA STOP, ON THE RIGHT SIDE (going uphill). There is a bus as well which goes straight to Odawara station, which we took when our stay was over, thanks to Tammie's advice. The bed and futons were very comfortable, the room had 2 different seating areas and looked out toward the mountains. It also had a sink in the room. The women's bathroom had 2 stalls and one sink and was kept clean. The onsen bath was available to use when we asked for it, which was lucky because it's the only available option for showering and bathing. The ropeway is only one stop up on the cable car. Just be sure to check the ending schedule, which might change depending on the season and weekday vs weekend.

GermanyDo yourself a favor and take the cable car to the hostel. Do not attempt to go there by foot unless you want to arrive sweaty! Remember that on most days the cable car only operates until around 7 pm.
The staff is nice and very helpful. The rooms are as one would expect. The onsen is small and comfortable but very hot! The hotel serves different drinks for a small fee.

AustriaWe stayed in the small room which was fine in size, but it has a window facing the corridor and it was pretty bright inside all night even though we switched off the light in the corridor. Also the pillows were really hard, but that is of course personal preference.
The onsen was perfect, the private booking was so uncomplicated and easy. Really enjoyed our bath! Also loved the traditional feel, the tatami in the room and the friendly owner.

Germany- nothing special. - take care to arrive early as it is complicated to arrive in the evening when the tourist train is not running anymore
- nice onsen which can be booked each night (perfect after a long walking day) ! - friendly and helpful owner, gave us some advice & information. - room was clean and spacious (also good to discover the traditional Japanese style). - It's possible to buy something to eat at the accommodation (we arrived late).

IsraelOne thing that bothered me a little was the showers. It was in the same room as the Onsen and located on the floor below our room. In order to take a shower I needed to book the time in advance, same as booking the Onsen because it’s in the same room.
The manager was extremely nice and caring, she explained everything we need to know about Hakone and was always ready to help. The room is big, we were 2 people so we had a lot of room to put our things. There is a sink in the room which was also very comfortable.

AustraliaIn your advertising it would be good to tell people to get off at the right hand side of the cable train. Also at the bottom of the driveway place a sign in Nippongo and Romanji indicating the way.
Location is great. The journey to get there is fantastic by the train and cable train. Very close to the tourist trail around Hakone yet quiet. Great onset (spa). Make sure you get off on the right hand side at the station.

United KingdomNot much! Private bathrooms and shower would have been a bonus but it wasn’t a major issue
The property was in a great location very near a cable car station so not far to go for daily activities. Our room also had lovely views over the mountains! The private onsen was a real treat too. Tammy the owner was absolutely amazing. She had tonnes of knowledge about the area and really did care about us having a lovely stay, she upgraded us to her biggest room seeing as we were on honeymoon and out of the 6 hotel we have stayed in Japan this is the only one that acknowledged and treated us due to it being our honeymoon! Thank you so much!
