Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United Arab Emirates-there was a flight of stairs right infront of the entrance so you’d have to carry your luggage although the staffs are very very helpful - the baths are rather small. Might be better to go to yunessun -the lounge gets really full after dinner but this is no fault of the hotel -the slippers are very slippery and quite dangerous when walking up and down the stairs, the bathroom slippers are so much better to walk around with
-there is a bus stop right outside the property -the food is well prepared, beautifully served -we got lucky having the cherry blossom views in peak season -there is a private onsen that does not require prior reservation (although it is small) -ryokan is old authentic and traditional

United KingdomSome of the food was an acquired taste, especially breakfast, but all part of the authentic Japanese experience. Some more guidance on wearing the traditional robe and jacket as first timers would've helped but didn't detract from the experience.
Amazing place to get totally relaxed. The private onsen was a real treat and the beds extremely comfortable. We slept really well.

RussiaI stayed at the end of March and it was very cold in the room. I turned on the air conditioning at 30 degrees and warmed up with onsen and sake :)
a wonderful ryokan in traditional Japanese style, incredible breakfasts and dinners that will delight you! very friendly hosts, cozy room. I had a room with a private onsen and it was a great stay. The hotel also has a shared onsen, but I found the water in it hotter than in the private one. The rooms have everything you need; they provide slippers, yukatas, bathrobes, and socks. the appearance of ryokan is great

JapanOne of the managers has a short temper and he yells at the staff in front of the guests. He also seems stressed out like he doesn't want to answer my questions, I understand if his job is stressful or whatever but acting like that in front of guests makes us not want to come back.
All of the facilities were easy to use, the food was amazing, many English speaking staff, and 5 minute walking distance to Yunessun made it unforgettable.

This was a very authentic stay and we really loved it. The food was exquisite and we wore traditional dress (optional) at meal times. We had a villa and the onsens were fabulous. The staff were polite and professional and we give very special thanks to the gentleman who carried the cases up and down the steps and gave us directions for buses. There are bus stops directly outside the Ryoken.

NetherlandsIt lays a bit outside. Please remember to take time to travel over there. If you would like to see more of the surroundings, better spend two nights. In the corridors it was quite chilly.
Relaxing stay in a beautiful old Japanese Ryokan. We enjoyed the food and the Onsen bath very much. For us a new and memorable experience. Very friendly and helpful staff. We had a nice big room with a balcony/view to the mountains. A shuttle bus from Gora brings you to the hotel.

CanadaThe public transit going to the ryokan. It was a bit difficult getting used to navigating the bus routes on google-maps from Odawara station to the mountainous region that the ryokan is in, as the names of the buses on google-maps in Hakone were all in Japanese, whereas in Tokyo, the transit routes were all in english. HOWEVER, there are a lot of other ryokans in the area, so we were able to show the bus driver our final destination on google maps, and they were able to direct us as to when we were going to get off. This ryokan DID have a dedicated bus stop right outside its bottom steps of the stairs! It was pouring rain on the day we arrived, but the morning after it was a beautiful day. Our biggest problem, was that on our last day in Hakone we wanted to explore a bit before heading back to tokyo, and trying to take the H line bus back down to Odowara is a bit difficult with 4 people, as that line in particular was ALWAYS at full capacity around 2~3pm when we wanted to go back to Odowara station from the ryokan. If you choose to skip going to explore a bit, or choose to stay a bit longer, I highly suggest using the shuttle from the ryokan that runs to the station around 10am.
The accomodations were extraordinary! From check-in to check-out, it was absolutely an amazing experience. With the patient and wonderful staff who spoke great english, to the welcome and complimentary taiyaki with green tea, to the amazing onsen with the great products for hand-washing, facial cleanser, and lotion in the common area for men were absolutely top tier! They had both a public indoor onsen, a public outdoor onsen, and a private onsen, which unfortunately I didn't get a chance to try because our stay was so short, but both the public indoor and outdoor onsens were fantastic! The room that I got to stay in as well was VERY spacious, VERY clean, and had some of the best complimentary cookies and tea that I had during my entire trip to Japan! The room had tatami floors, and in the closet there were 2 sets of futon so you could have slept 4 people in a single room to be honest! The room itself had 2 double/twin beds which were very comfortable. Wi-Fi was fast and free, and the bathroom had wonderful soap, cleansers, and lotion as well. There were two sliding doors, which separated the bedroom from the tea/sitting area and washroom, and opening them up in the morning to see the sun rise over the horizon past the mountains of Hakone was an AMAZING experience! Getting to sit in those traditional low chairs with low table sipping green tea while having that view was breathtaking! Furthermore, They also provide an amenity kit including a toothbrush, toothpaste, a comb, and a razor. And with your price, the dinner and breakfast were included which were massive meals! I think the best part of being at a ryokan is being able to wear the yukata that are provided in 3 different sizes in the closet of your hotel room, and then being able to wear them EVERYWHERE! Including going to the onsen, and both dinner and breakfast in the morning! I would definitely stay at this ryokan again.

AustraliaA little cold in the corridors and dated. Bedrooms and main spaces were cozy. Some people may not like that the only shower facilities were in the onsen for many of the rooms.
Traditional nature of the Ryokan…and history of this particular one. Loved the dinner and breakfast. It encouraged my son to sample sashimi. Both meals were delicious.
