Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

ItalyStaying here was such a highlight to our journey and an adventure! Definitely worth booking more than one night, be sure to enjoy the onsen, which btw is the only way you’ll be able to bathe. Meals are part of the experience and although the quality is pretty good, the quantity is way too much.

New ZealandLocation: It's pretty far from Gora Station, but luckily the hotel offers a shuttle service from the station. There's also a bus stop right outside the hotel so you can head towards moto-hakone port for the sightseeing cruise. Be aware the bus in the morning 9-10am was very busy for us, barely any standing room and you'll most likely have issues with rolling luggage. Stay: We got one of the private villas in the annex area of the main hotel. The place was large, there's an indoor bath and outdoor bath. We came in February and it was quiet cold so we had to have the heat pump on pretty high. It was quite nice to go from frigid cold to nice hot bath, very relaxing. Dinner and breakfast were great, they did give us an option for western or Japanese breakfasts.

CanadaThey can improve on the cleanliness of the room and I was expecting better quality from dinner as I had better dinner experience in Kurokawa.
The villa that we stayed was spacious and onsen was our favourite.

IrelandThat we didn't stay long enough!!
Our stay at Hakone Kowakien Mikawaya Ryokan was truly unforgettable. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with such warmth and kindness from the staff, who went above and beyond to make us feel at home. The property is absolutely breathtaking, with stunning views and a serene atmosphere that made it feel like a peaceful escape. Our room was incredibly spacious, beautifully designed, and featured a lovely balcony. We felt so at peace that we ended up skipping our plans to visit the open-air museum just to fully enjoy the ryokan! The kaiseki dinner and breakfast were nothing short of spectacular. Each dish was thoughtfully prepared, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious! The onsen experience was another highlight, with both indoor and outdoor baths that offered perfect relaxation. Plus, the gift shop had wonderful local items that made for unique souvenirs. If you’re looking for a place that combines beautiful scenery, spacious rooms, and exceptional hospitality, Hakone Kowakien Mikawaya Ryokan is an absolute must-visit. We left with hearts full of gratitude and wonderful memories!

United StatesNot the property’s fault but getting to it was tedious given how crowded the bus was.
Wonderfully maintained especially given its age. It was very comfy and we especially liked the staff and how kind they were.

ChinaHot water needs wait for long time. Public onsen is too small, just fit for 2-3 people at the same time. The building refurbishment is needed.
Traditional building with a lot of history. Services is very good. Thanks again for sending us to the post office. The food is good too.

AustraliaThere was too much food at each of the kaiseki dinners served, causing concern for food waste. We also had to insist on having dinner at 6 30 instead of 5 30.
Our stay at this ryokan was exceptional. The building is beautiful, our room was great (Japanese twin annex no bathroom), staff very attentive and the food superb. There's a bus stop just outside and it's very easy to access points of interest.

FinlandThe vegetarian food was good, but not exceptional. The private onsen on the balcony was very relaxing, although it is close to the street and you can hear cars driving by. There is no view from the onsen in the Annex building. The room was very spacious and comfortable. It has worn out in a charming way. The old main building is really beautiful and atmospheric. Sōunzan Station is very close by car, and from there you can reach the Owakudani Observatory. Our trip was in the second week of March and it was snowing a lot.

United StatesWe really enjoyed our 1 night stay, all the staff were very friendly and welcoming! It was easy to get to the ryokan via their shuttle bus. As for meals, the dinner and breakfast were beautifully presented and delicious! The portions were very filling too. The best part of our stay was the private onsen in our room - it was so relaxing to use!

New ZealandBeing a traditional ryokan, the hallways and some common areas were cold.
Welcoming, well maintained traditional ryokan. We had the half board package, and it was delicious. Great outdoor/indoor onsen centre nearby, which is accessible free of charge. The room comfortable and spacious with a pleasant garden view

The staff was super nice, the food was delicious (I had tradicional dinner and breakfast; and while doing the checking they give you a welcome snack) and the room was incredible (the best thing that I have ever done is choose the room with the private onsen. I'll come back again for sure! And It has a bus stop at the door where stops the line that takes you to Lake aishi-Odawara st.

AustraliaThe sink was blocked throughout my stay. I wasn’t too bothered as was only staying overnight so have only advised them on check out. Meals are average, could do better. Location is strategically situated along bus line, bus stop is right outside. However, we had trouble getting on the bus coming from Gora heading towards the lake as the bus tends to be fully loaded already (10am morning, likely peak time). We had to miss 2 buses that came past, even the 3rd one, only myself could go on it and the other couple couldn’t fit and have to wait for the next bus.
Love the spacious room size, good ammenities, comfortable bed, open air onsen bath.

GermanyThe staff was very lovely and competent. The kaiseki dinner and the japanese breakfast were absolutely delicious. The room was spacious and comfortable. It comes with a yukata and a basket to put your stuff when going to the onsen, a really nice touch! You can reserve a small private onsen bath to yourself for 1hr and their public onsen was also great! You can book a shiatsu massage through the hotel and they will come directly to your room, that was great after a long walking! It's a fairly easy access from Gora with a bus stop directly at the doorstep of the hotel (also goes directly to Odawara for the Shinkansen to Osaka/Kyoto). We had such an amazing experience at this ryokan!

RussiaIt might be confusing for travelers to know that the famous big onsen Hakone Kowakien Yunessun is actually not a part of the ryokan, yet the guests can come to this onsen in the daytime free of charge, when staying at Hakone Kowakien Mikawaya Ryokan. The ryokan itself has onsen as well which is rather good! It operated properly in the evening, but wasn't hot enough in the morning, though I went during the opening hours (at around 7-8 a.m.). Maybe I should have asked for the personnel to assist. The room was fine but for the heater: I think it didn't heat the room quite enough and needed repair.
I enjoyed my stay at Hakone Kowakien Mikawaya Ryokan. The ryokan location is very good: not so close to the cable railway station or the Ashi lake, but close to the Hakone Kowakien Yunessun (big public onsen). The personnel are polite, all the amenities have been provided. Kaiseki (dinner + breakfast) were above my expectations.
