We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

ColombiaThe wifi in the villa was terrible, it did not work at all. But considering the plan was to disconnect, this was not the end of the world. There was a confusion about the time of the dinner. They said on the day of arrival it was going to be 8.30, but when the day came, they called at 6.30 PM saying they had been waiting for us since 6.30 pm. When we told them they had said it was 8.30 pm (we also had prove as they provide a document with the schedule and the document clearly stated dinner was at 8.30 PM), they just said that was a mistake, the restaurant was closing and we had to be there in 5 minutes. That was very bad because I had just had a snack and was in the middle of my onsen bath, so I was not hungry at all and had to cut short my relaxation time.
I loved the traditional Japanese experience. I loved the private onsen and although the stay was pricy, it was worth it. I made a mistake with my reservation and they corrected it very quickly. The villa was superb.

United StatesThe ambiance and serenity of our wonderful private onsen was unfortunately invaded by the loud street traffic barreling by outside. I was not prepared for this and it detracted from my stay. Also, the instructions on how to get to this ryokan were very confusing. We chose to take the J bus from Odawara which landed us at Tenyu which was not our Ryokan. Please update the directions to get guests to the correct property. Being this was our first ryokan, I was hoping a staff member would have explained the etiquette of wearing the robes to meals—we went on You-tube to find the information we needed!
Lovely historic architecture and setting in the trees. Loved the gardens.

BelgiumRoom heating (air co unit) is noisy.
A Japanese immersion in a classy ryokan. Room with outside private onsen was a great and relaxing experience, especially under moonlight. The ryokan is isolated from the villages, therefore the traditional Japanese dinner is included.

Food, onsen and the vibe of this ryokan. The private onsen in the private villa is one of the best onsen I have ever experienced in Japan

PortugalNothing at all
Everything! One of the best experiences of my life. We just booked one night with dinner and breakfast in a room with private open air bath and it was just perfect to relax after such an overwhelming trip. The food was amazing, the staff very very kind, I have no words. Even the location is perfect in the middle of the mountains and with a bus stop right at the door. I wish I have stayed longer!

United KingdomThe rooms feel just a little bit outdated, and ours had a slight smell of mould. Perhaps it's because we had an onsen on our balcony, so there's more moisture to go round. I would have also preferred a room facing away from the road for the price - however that wasn't a big issue as everything is covered in foliage and it wasn't a busy road.
Beautiful traditional hotel in the mountains. Our room was very spacious (twin with an onsen and it was so worth it). We have also checked out the communal onsen which had both an inside and outside pools and a very chill vibe. Amazing traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast - don't expect cereal or eggs, this is very different to a European breakfast. We loved walking around the hotel in our yucatas. Overall an amazing stay. I'd also recommend the Hakone sculpture park afterwards - it's a 20 minute walk away or a bus ride.

United StatesWe didn't love that there wasn't much of a view from our balcony, but the private hot spring bath more than made up for that. In our opinion, breakfast is served too early (8:30am), but that won't bother everyone. As a heads up, breakfast is VERY Japanese. There are multiple soups and several kinds of fish. It's an elaborate spread tho, so everyone should be able to find something to eat.
We loved the western style beds, even though this is a very classic Ryokan. We also loved our private onsen and outdoor shower on the deck off the back of our room. The space was huge, including a table, chairs, two twin beds (western mattresses!), a mini-fridge and private bathroom. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The hotel onsen is open until midnight, which is great. You don't have to book dinner in advance of your first night, so don't worry about checking in late. As long as you arrive before 8:00pm, having dinner on site will not be a problem. On our second night, there were multiple western touches in our evening meal, which we really appreciated by this point in our trip. Dinner is huge and delicious, so arrive hungry. It's also included with your room price. Only drinks cost extra. There is also a hotel shuttle bus to the nearest train station, Gora, which is convenient for getting around Hakone.

AustraliaRoom was dated and not clean with dust and musky smell. The outdoor deck was broken and I fall into it and luckily didn't hurt myself. Advised the reception and they had the maintenance came in and fixed them.
Had the half board package and it was fantastic. There's a bus stop just right at the front of the Ryokan which is very convenient. Very traditional and authentic Japanese building and history.

CanadaBecause I booked for a villa, it is quite a bit of a walk to the main building. Moreover, the path from the main building to the villa is not well-lit, it is a bit of a challenge to walk back to the villa after dinner.
The place is absolutely beautiful. And the on-site onsen is perfect.

NetherlandsIf I have to say anything, maybe the breakfast isn't for everyone. It's Japanese style breakfast, think grilled fish, tofu, miso soup, rice. I think many western tourists have a different idea about it ;)
Very sweet staff and a nice Onsen! Room is spacious and nicely decorated. Traditional accommodation but very nice to experience it like this. There's a bus stop right at the entrance of the hotel.

ChinaTV is a bit small and the bed was too soft for me (my husband said he’s fine with it)
The whole property has a 140 years history, which could be seen as a representative of the ryokan culture in Hakone. We were very pleased to stay at the hotel. Staffs were very friendly, they even got a staff can speak Chinese, who gave us a lot of help. The private onsen and the villa itself were a great experience. My parents stayed in the villa and they felt like so relaxed after a long day. Food were great too. We also ordered a Sake and it was not very expensive. In total, everything was great in here.

CanadaThe photos as many are were misleading only due to the size of the outdoor and indoor private onsen tubs. They were much smaller than expected. I guess that can be said with every hotel or picture of any facility advertised though.
The facility was clean and inviting. Was a nice reprieve from the cities we were in previously. It was quiet and calming with our own onsen in our room. The dinner was spectacular and you could see it took ours to prepare. Coming from North America, the breakfast was not something we were to used to but was still something that should be tried.
