Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

AustraliaThere was nothing we did not like, everything was excellent with the hotel.
Absolutely stunning old ryoken tucked away up in the mountains. We had a room with a private onsen that looked out on the surrounding forest and it was literally heaven. Delicious and huge meals provided for breakfast and dinner and attentive and helpful staff who were very helpful throughout our entire stay. The area is pretty hilly so you need to be prepared to walk up some steep slopes if you want to explore around on foot (although a bus route runs right by the hotel) and even to your room if you have one of the separate private onsen rooms like we did. The staff did help with the bags though which was nice.

United KingdomThe hotel is quite old and some features are quite outdated. Not a problem per se, but given the price, I would have expected something better.
The place was really nice and the onsen in the room was extremely comfortable!

United StatesVilla could be cleaner and better maintained. There was cobwebs, and dead insects on windowsills, and the air filter was full of dust. Holes in the paper sliding doors. Holes in walls from old mounting points. Small things add up, especially for the price.
Meals were excellent. Architecture is great. Ambiance is great. Staff was attentive, had ok english. Indoor and outdoor onsen were excellent.

AustraliaSome hallways are cluttered with storage items. Room service staff could be forgetful. Free coffee wasn't great, Service could be better for the price. (Some staff feel like they are still in training)
Private onsen is great. Very generous and delicious food. Good quality daily snacks and tea. Comfy common sitting / break / tea area with good sceneries. Public onsen and amenities are good.

AustraliaThe hotel shuttle service instructions were not really clear but we found it nevertheless. The pillows were a bit hard. The private onsen was too hot, but the shared onsen was lovely.
Staying at a traditional Japanese Ryokan was a treat. The building was delightful, everything about it was a great experience. The staff was exceptional. The food was different for a westerner but everything was tasty and worth trying. We had both dinner and breakfast and if ever you wanted a Japanese experience this was it. The hotel is also beautifully located with so much else to do in the area. We were sorry we only spent one night. The train ride to Gora was beautiful and an experience in itself. The hotel shuttle service was great.

The property was absolutely beautiful! Well-maintained and clean, with a lot of options for exploration. For an old building there was no concerns with the cleanliness, smell, dust, etc. The staff were extremely nice and accommodating as well.

ThailandDo note that rooms in the annex do not have private shower facilities. You will need to use the public baths.
The Mikawaya Ryokan is a well-preserved historic hot spring inn located in a central part of the mountainous Hakone region. The Tozan bus stops right in front, making it easy to hop on with the tourist-friendly Odakyu Freepass. The onsen baths are well-kept and are soothing. The meals are exceptional. The ryokan staff speak good English and are very hospitable.

Canada-the public onsen was underwhelming. The highlight of this place are its private onsens. -the internet was a little spotty
-loved that it was a traditional ryokan stay, complete with yukatas -the personal onsen was lovely -the staff were very kind and welcoming -comfy beds -enjoyed the tatami mat floors -the food was good, but it is traditional Japanese food including kaiseki and hotpot, so be aware of the fact that it will challenge western pallets. -some reviews called it dated, but I think it’s more historical than dated. The main building is 100 years-old, which is pretty cool. -convenient and easy to bus to; bus stop is directly outside of the ryokan -15 minute walk to Hakone Open Air Museum (which was very cool and worth visiting)

United StatesI wish the wi-fi worked better and it was closer to the main train station (Odawara). We had to take a bus for half an hour that was hard to find :(
The food was beautiful and amazing! Our room was so clean, traditional, and had a wonderful private onsen for us to soak in. Loved the privacy and tranquility of the place. The staff was also extremely helpful and friendly. We had such a great experience :)
