Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

New ZealandIt felt a bit like a cruise ship… so many people including tour groups you could hear from meters away. We were placed on a smoking floor even though we are non smoking and in a smoking room - not that pleasant. We were also by the elevators which were noisy all night with people coming and going. Unfortunately this experience is not a five stars for me and the money it costs is probably not representative of the service. Having said that the food was delicious and the staff friendly.
It was great to stay in a Ryokan for the first time, and we loved the dinner and breakfast. The room was fantastic with plenty of room.

SingaporeIt's quite far from the nearest restaurant. And shuttle pick-up timing is quite limited.
Really nice room and a nice view of the mountains and river. Very friendly staff and nice onsen.

United States-
Very atmospheric hotel with lots of common areas for guests to relax and socialize. Loved our room, and delicious dinner/breakfast, and kindest staff, and the most wonderful onsen. You can also reserve one of the two private onsens on a first come first serve basis.

AustraliaThe location is too far out to walk with suitcases but they run a shuttle bus between the hotel and the main bus stop. I wouldn't say the nightly price is good value for money but it is an experience I won't forget. There are only 2x private onsens - and always a queue for them - but you can visit the public onsen instead.
If you are looking for a traditional Japanese experience, this is it. Tatami mats, food and onsen. This was the only hotel in Shirakawago that provided your private bathroom/toilet. The hotel is located on the river - we left the window open at night to listen to the water gurgling past.

AustraliaIt is a flat 20+ minute walk from the bus station. Ensure you know about the hotel shuttle bus ahead of time.
This is a wonderful hotel. It exceeded our expectations. The private onsen a warm retreat. The local food on offer is a delight - dinner and breakfast.

United StatesAdded a third night. First floor waterside end rooms have a musty odor that gets quite noticeable, quite nasty dirty rag smell. Did not complain, but it really needs to be addressed. Kaiseki dinners were not very impressive for the cost. Some of the choices should really not be choices but inclusive. After all, the portions are small. Sofa noodle quality especially was sub par for kaiseki dining.
Absolute cleanliness, wiping off the luggage wheels was an excellent touch. No shoe wear, only bare feet or socks is an excellent choice. Little popsicles or yogurt in the morning is a good, located centrally. Not sure water view adds too much. Onsen what's good. King side bed extra suite is a good setup. Ample free parking was very nice.

Netherlands-
Beautiful, peaceful location close to Shirakawa-go (we walked but they also have a shuttle bus available). Great amenities. The dinner experience was really special and the breakfast was delicious. We enjoyed the onsen and the late night ramen! We originally only planned to stay for one night but decided to extend our stay. It was really vacation.

United StatesThe shuttle isn’t very convenient, it only runs on the morning, there isn’t another way to move around, and when it was on the afternoon and we were hungry looking for a place to eat the staff told us to walk, so we were walking about 30 minutes to go to the Shirakawa-go village and find places to eat, we did eat one breakfast at the hotel which both me and my husband didn’t enjoy, which meant more walking :/ I just wish the hotel had more care for their customers with the shuttle because it is only a 5 minutes drive , and they don’t have options for dinner at the hotel either
I love the view from the bedroom of the mountains, and the private onsen was nice too

United KingdomI’m not sure what you would do if not eating at the hotel, ie getting into town etc. I think the hotel only offers a set Japanese meal. A bit too far to walk into town and I’m not sure if there are Taxis there.
Excellent hotel. It’s been our favourite hotel so far. Loved that we could dress in colourful kimonos and walk around the hotel with Japanese socks both of which provided by the hotel. The onsen was amazing. Great shuttle service to the bus station. We opted for the Japanese dinner and breakfast. Lots of food. Some of it was a little too adventurous for us but the sashimi was delicious. Lots of things to try. Free ramen at night. Just so many little touches with this hotel. Just loved it so much! Our room was incredible with views over the river. We were 3 family members, with grown up child. Highly recommend!!
