Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Hong KongThe location is quite far away from Shirakawa-go. The visitors need to take hotel shuttle bus or drive by themselves.
The cleanliness is very good. The shoes need to take off at the entrance and the staff clean the wheels of the luggage. The hot springs area are wonderful. The meal are delicious.

Complementary drop-off and collection service to the bus stop in Shirakawago. Very responsive to messages. Only thing to note, pick up from bus station starts at 2pm

Breakfast is exceptional with full set of Japanese food. Onsen is very good of both private and public onsen. Room is spacious. no shoe entire the facility, very clean.

SingaporeWe stayed two nights, with meals. The meals were excellent and they were very accomodating to my 4-year-old! One of the best child meals I've seen! The rooms were spacious and well-maintained. The onsen facilities were also excellent. Overall, a wonderful stay.

AustraliaSome areas are slightly dusty, as the place is surrounded by nature, the outside of our window has cob webs and there are dead bugs on the external window sills. The air-con in the shuttle doesn't feel like it's working. The location is quite remote so you need to time your arrival with the shuttle and plan your meals.
If you want a full ryokan experience, this is where you need to go. My family and I enjoyed every moment of our time there. The staff were attentive and the facilities were top notch. The hotel also offered shuttle bus (van) from Shirakawa-go bus terminal. If you are not driving, you'll have to make sure to time your arrival and departure with the shuttle bus otherwise it's a 30min walk. The bus from the bus terminal arrives at 15:05, 15:35, 16:10, 16:40 and 17:25. The hotel is a shoe free hotel and you walk around the whole hotel on tatami, which is an amazing experience. It also offers lounge wear which you can wear around the whole hotel or you can rent Yukata for free to wear. The hotel has an indoor and open air bath for male and female or there's 2 private open air bath to use. The hotel has timed events throughout the day, such as free non alcoholic drink bar, mochi tasting between 6-7pm, free freshly made ramen, and dango between 10-11pm, free coffees for most of the day. In the morning, there's also Yakult available for drinking. There is also an onsite gift shop. As the location is quite remote, definitely recommend booking breakfast and dinner as there are no restaurants nearby. Breakfast and dinner are definitely a treat and an experience worth paying for.

IsraelNeed to plan around shuttle time which is not that bad but need to be taken into account. Also the food is well presented and plentiful, but some of the fish could be fresher or better prepared.
Very nice decor, super restful, many things to do and ways to relax. Staff were nice. Also the shuttle is convenient, just make sure to ask about the hours and plan around it.

SpainThere was no transport available to go from the hotel to Shirakawago after 12 am, which was not convenient since the hotel is 25 mins walking from the bus station and to walk this distance with the luggage wasn’t very practical.
The room was very big and the hotel was perfect. The onsen is also very nice and inside the hotel there are some activities such as wearing a yukata or late noodles in the night which are already included on the price.

United StatesI think booking.com should make it clear the private onsen was not in the room. I misunderstood this when searching for rooms on booking.com. The private onsen was amazing and everything was great. This is a very minor detail.
Kaiseki and breakfast were amazing and more than expected. Both private and public onsens were great. I needed a private onsen because I have a tattoo which is not allowed in the public onsen. The room and the views were beautiful. The hotel provides a shuttle to and from the bus station. The shuttle sometimes fills up with guests and needs to make two trips.

AustraliaFront desk staff should prioritise check in for people with babies, elderly, etc. We waited 15 minutes with an upset baby annoying everyone around us while others were checked in before us. There's a reason why there are priority lines in airports etc for these types of people.
Beautiful hotel with all the Japanese touches. This was the most luxurious hotel we stayed at! Loved the onsen and the food was excellent.

United StatesWe had an issue with the aircon in one of the rooms. It would intermittently start to make a LOT of noise, and periodically reset to 26 degrees which as you might imagine isn’t great if it happens every 2-3 hours at night. We told the front desk about the issue but it wasn’t resolved. Despite this - it is a phenomenal hotel and worth staying here. The hallway light in the room is also motion sensor activated which means whoever goes to the bathroom in the middle of the night will trigger the light which will wake up half the people in the apartment. The Wi-Fi in the evenings wasn’t great so if you need to take zoom calls be prepared to get a data plan for your phone.
One of the nicest places we have ever stayed. Everything in the hotel was of very high quality, they have clearly put a lot of thought into everything. The hotel beds, bedding, duvets, etc. are exceptional. They provide pajamas in multiple sizes and yukatas free of charge which is great. The public baths are fantastic too. It was a real privilege to stay here.

GermanyThe location is a bit far from the bus terminal, but it is only a 20 minutes walk with light luggages. It is pricey, but definitely worth it for one night
The room was very spacious and the beds very comfortable. The onsen is amazing and they offer coffee/drinks/late night noodles, which were very much appreciated. The shuttle service in the morning to the bus terminal is very convenient.
