Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.

Stayed in a private room for one night during my stopover & it was clean. The bathrooms were also kept very clean. There’s a small kitchen & washer/dryer to use! Check in was simple & smooth. Didn’t feel the safest walking around as a solo female but there was a nice restaurant on the water a short distance away so that was nice!

We really enjoyed our stay at AeCOTEL Mingle. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The room was nice and clean and especially the sanitaries were good. The price performance ratio is great.

AeCOTEL Mingle Hostel was fantastic. It is centrally located in town and you can walk everywhere. I had a wonderful room and great wifi. The bathrooms were extremely clean and convenient to use. I was able to relax and regroup here after being in the Jungle and ahead of moving on to the next chapter of my trip. Thanks!!

Some info upfront for check-in would be great as you need to call/chat via Whatsapp but only know this when you stand in front of the door. Many guests didn't read it directly and rang the bell several times before they got inside
Great Location, clean and comfy room. Shared facilities very clean. Washing machine is a big plus.

Nothing really. I had problems getting hot water out of the shower. The man showed me what to do, but I only managed once. I think you probably have to keep the switches on for a long time. A mirror in the room m8ght have been handy.
The hostel was opened in 2024. It was spacious, the room was quite big. There were four rooms on my floor with two showers and two toilets, which was more than adequate. The hostel is very central, though there is practically nothing to do in Sandakan. It had a kitchenette with a washing machine and dryer.

It's a perfect place in the downtown, bedrooms are big and clean and comfortable. The staff is so polite and helpful. I recommend that place

The check-in was very confusing. We rung the doorbell and another guest openend. Our room key was on the reception desk with a stickynote with our name on it. For the rest no welcome or information about the facilities (for example how much the washing machine cost to use, that we can take coffee whenever we like, etc). At the least this could have been communicated through booking or whatsapp. For the rest there was 0.0 atmosphere. Just by replacing the weird tire chairs with some couches or hanging up 1 or 2 paintings the place would have gotten a much better vibe.
It was quite clean! The manager seemed to clean it on a daily basis. The beds were also comfortable. The location is also super. All in all this is a budget accomodation but it has all the basics you need.

The air conditioning could be cooler, but overall it’s great value for money.
I stayed here for a few days and loved it! The staff were super friendly, the place was clean, and the pantry was great. Having a washer and dryer was so convenient. I’ll definitely stay here again when I’m in Sandakan!

Good location right next to a big mall and the ocean for sunset. Everything is very organized and clean. The staff responded very fast all the time and was very helpful. I’d definitely come back.

Bedding smelled a little off (like it had been sat in the dryer for too long)
No issues at all. It’s pretty quiet, which we liked. Loved that there is a washing machine so you can do your washing yourself. Very self-service, which is nice. We enjoyed our stay.

It was very central, everything on walking distance, check in was very smoothly. The bed is very comfortable and the rooms are clean and spacious. The host is always fast with answering any questions. I forgot my e-reader under the pillow and they went above and beyond with help! They did all the communication with DHL and send it overseas so I could get it back! Truly amazing guests service!

Whilst we appreciated the laundry services, the tumble dryer needs looking at, it doesn't work properly, taking hours to dry your clothes! Soundproofing between the rooms could be better but not sure what you can really do about that - seems like a recurring problem in Malaysia properties to be fair!
The bed was super comfy, everything was clean (even the communal bathrooms) and everything is fresh and new as the Hostel only opened this year. We really appreciated the Laundry facilities and the free drinks in the kitchen (access to tea/coffee/drinking water) Location was great too, you are right in and amongst all the shops and restaurants in the area and the mall is only a 5-min walk away. We went on a 2-night tour and could store our larger bags while away. We could rent a car easily from the property when we returned which gave us the freedom to explore the area including all the animal centres in Sepilok The man that manages the place and does all the cleaning every day is so lovely and helpful, we really enjoyed our stay here!

Could use a new brush/sponge to clean dishes in the kitchen
Would definitely recommend staying here. Our room was a great size and very clean. We were also happy with how clean the shared bathrooms were. The owner was fantastic and helped us figure out how to take a mini-bus to the Orangutang sanctuary in Sepilok which saved us a lot of money. The hostel is also in a great area to explore Sandakan by foot.

Everything is arranged through whatsapp where they respond very quickly. This turned out to be very nice when you run into problems when you re not at the hotel.
