Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

NetherlandsThe property is special because of its authentic historical value being a heritage property. The hotel is very well maintained and is kept very clean. The staff is excellent, friendly and communicative. There is wonderful pool with a nice pool bar with lovely cappuccino and snacks. Plus I love the well maintained garden with lots of flowers! An oasis in the centre of Kathmandu!

AustraliaLike: Staff are very accommodating and always willing to help. Front yard of the hotel is really relaxing and beautiful setting with ancient palace feel. Recent renovations have given the hotel a good facelift. Dislike: Fitness centre is little run down and needs some more equipment. Only 3 cardio machines available for use.

DenmarkGorgeous former place to stay in, set back from the road with quiet, lovely grounds and nice pool. Interesting carvings and artwork inside and beautifully painted and decorated. Great service and good breakfast with choice of various hot options. Very helpful staff. A 15- 20 minute walk from the noise and bustle of Thamel. A real treat to stay here.

AustraliaNice room, comfortable bed, cot provided for our 3 year old for free. Garden area was nice to play in. Buffet breakfast was quite good, with a selection of both western and Nepali dishes, plus a "cooked to order" egg station. Instant hot showers a real treat in Nepal.

United KingdomThe bathroom didn't drain very quickly, but the hotel staff tried to rectify this. The currency exchange rates weren't the best, we could get better elsewhere.
The hotel is set back from the busy streets, so very calm. The history and heritage makes this place very special with all the original features and details. The rooms are clean. There were a lot of breakfast options. The restaurant had tasty (not too spicy food). The staff were very friendly. The bedrooms had many light settings and two pillow sizes. The beds were king or super king, so quite large. The staff were very friendly and attentive.

United StatesPeople were so accommodating, a beautiful place to stay in a great location. The staff up front were great with recommendations and help with my rides and transfers. The breakfast was incredible, as someone that is gluten free they brought me handmade gluten free pancakes and freshly baked bread everyday. Everyone went above and beyond to make sure I had options to eat and were exceptional. I couldn’t recommend a better place and friendlier or more accommodating staff!

United KingdomHair salon- my wife had a massage which was excellent but then she said her hair was washed in cold water and partially dried by a lovely young girl, whilst the stylist dealt with someone else. The stylist then stopped dealing with the other lady and finished off the drying of her hair and partially used the straighteners whilst she was sat in the middle of the Salon with no mirror in front of her So she couldn’t see what was happening- it all worked out in the end , her hair was ok but she don’t think she’d chance going again.
Breakfast was excellent, so much to choose from. We also had dinner one night and the food was absolutely delicious. We drank in the Bar and were well looked after, also the pool bar/restaurant was very good and the staff very attentive. An excellent choice of hotel for our last few nights in Kathmandu and an added advantage is that they hold weddings most days and the music and dancing was just fantastic.

BelgiumThis time i was really pleased with everything - only small comment for the kitchen: everything was really tasty; just the caesar salad would benefit a rethink as it is not how ‘those who know what a caesar salad is’ expect to have. And one more thing, I would upgrade the poolside menu with some good smoothies and fresh juices (offer is a little limited).
As usual the Shanker offers that sophisticated home away from home feel that is both authentic and not pretentious. Always enjoy the poolside lunch and afternoon soother! The garden was the daily scenery for beautiful traditional weddings and other ceremonies that made the stay that more immersive. Breakfast really pleasant, room dinner menu very decent, prices in line with service. Personnel really attentive and helpful.

United KingdomReception staff were efficient but a little more distant compared to so many people we came across during our stay in Nepal
Breakfast was plentiful regarding choice. Attentive staff. This was our second stay within the same month. The room for our second stay 21-23rd November was certainly more comfortable and well appointed than 3-5th room which was a little tired. This second room had a lovely bathroom, was well laid out with very versatile lighting.

FijiWow. I had booked my parents stay here for two days. They were amazed by the hotel and the room they got. They loved the fact it was a heritage hotel with history. The staff were super helpful and helped arrange for tour guide who was knowledgeable and patient throughout their tour. The friendly staff, clean rooms and the beautiful gardens made their stay in Kathmandu so special. The breakfast was excellent as well.

AustraliaNothing to dislike.
We visit Kathmandu every year or two and have for several years stayed at the Shanker before and after trekking. It’s close to Thamel but well away from the busy road, making it a quiet haven. The staff are very pleasant and attentive. The whole place is very clean, the rooms are comfortable and well equipped. A large selection of foods for breakfast, a swimming pool and large garden. Good value for a quality hotel.
