Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

GermanyIt’s a bit out of the way but still walkable. It has a bit of a hostel feel to it and for that it’s quite expensive, but I guess that’s Kaikoura for you.
Friendly staff, has a kitchen and some nice restaurants nearby.

New ZealandMy room was full of flies when I arrived - about 20 - some in the bedroom and some in the bathroom. In the morning the toilet seat and hand basin were fly-blown. Yuk! There must be something you can do to alleviate that, if only partially! The shower was ok, very basic, but the water wasn’t draining away - and the tray nearly full of dirty water when I stepped out. Another yuk I’m afraid!
Friendly Initial welcome and help was great! The layout was good, in a beautiful setting at the back and it was very quiet at night . The bed was comfy and I slept really well. It was great to see so much recycling required in the kitchen - which was immaculately clean! Wow - and that’s a lot of work for the managers! Well done!

GermanyApart from the bed, there was no furniture in the room, no table, no wardeobe, not even a hook to hang my clothes on. The room was too small to open my suitcase on the floor. Linen was dirty. Only 1 plug socket in the whole unit. It was in the bedroom - but far from the bed. So it was impossible to use a shaver or hair dryer.

United StatesThough the wifi was generally good, it didn't reach my room. I was alerted to this when I checked in - and for me that wasn't a problem at all. However, if having wifi in the room is important to you, you may want to indicate that when you book (I instead indicated that peace and quiet were important to me, which is why they gave me that particular room - and it was great in that respect!).
The room and shared areas were very clean, the owner was super friendly/helpful, and I really enjoyed the room I was in (it was in a peaceful spot around the back, and it had a lovely view of the fields and setting sun). The location was also very convenient - about halfway between the center of town and the big supermarket.

New ZealandI can cope with basic & old & quirky, but the lack of cleanliness 😕 .... it just needed a good "deep" clean. If bushes were trimmed back parking would have been easier. Lovely kids need to be kept safe, not playing on the drive/car parking area.
The lady hostess was pleasant & accommodating. It was good & interesting to meet other guests in the shared kitchen & dining area.

New ZealandThe place was not well-maintained, grass growing in the gutters. The verandah roof had been damaged at the end and not replaced. The garden had huge holes in it, looked like a sand pit. The tea towels in the kitchen were really stained and dirty. Of the places we've stayed in in the South Island I have to say we have had much cleaner looking places all round for less money. It needs a going over to bring the standard up.
Loved the back verandah view. Kitchen was well stocked. Bed was comfortable. I liked the hostess, she was really sweet and helpful.

New ZealandGreat accommodation. Beautiful sea views too. The host was super accommodating as I got in so late after a very late ferry & road closure/detour. We communicated via messages in the afternoon & the room was waiting for me at 11.30pm. And my bed was the best mattress I’ve felt in years, so now I know exactly what mattress to buy. Thank you.

New ZealandUpon arrival the first thing I was asked was for my money, I was shown the room after asking to see it. There was no shampoo, one sachet of soap, toilet paper ran out and the kitchen was not clean on my first day there. They asked for a bank transfer or cash upon arrival. I do not like to use my bank acc online under a commonly used wifi site so had to go to the bank. It felt like the business was creaming it over the long weekend without putting the effort in.
There was limited accommodation in Kaikoura and I was lucky enough to get something. They did respond to say that there were no quiet rooms left, however I took the only one I could get. Road noise was not so bad as I am used to it.
