How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.

Read above--the water wasn't hot. The walls were paper thin--we could hear every word of our neighbors conversation to someone on the phone. It was just dated.
Overall, the hotel was tired and a bit dated. From the garage where we parked to the lobby was quite a trek--up one elevator and walk across a courtyard and then down another tiny open elevator (if you don't want to carry your luggage down a flight of stairs--it was an elevator for disabled persons, I think), and then another long trek down hallways to get to the lobby. Our room was clean, but just a bit tired looking. Bed was comfortable. Hot water was lacking--shower only got warm, never hot. I would not recommend this hotel if you are a person who is sensitive to the little aesthetics that can make a space feel warm and welcoming versus flat and blah.

Room facilities are old compared with the photos. The bed is a little small for a queen size.

The hotel is amazing. I loved everything in my experience there. I really recommend it. It has a good location, the room is clean and comfy. The staffs were kind and helpful the whole time.

The air conditioner didn't work, it was cold and my child and I were on vacation, I called them and they said that the system was old and didn't work, they sent a blanket((((

The Handlery Union Square Hotel is amazing! It’s right in the heart of Union Square, making it super convenient for shopping, restaurants, and everything San Francisco has to offer. The room was way more comfortable than I expected for an older hotel, and the bed was so cozy. The staff were fantastic—they let us check in early at 10 a.m. and gave us a late check-out at 1 p.m., which I’ve never experienced anywhere else. We stayed for seven days, and everything was great from start to finish. I’ll definitely stay here again!

Although price was told in Booking to includes taxes and fees, the hotel will charge around $20. Also the hotel parking is ridiculously expensive ($75/night). Unfortunately that became expected for tourist, still disgusting and business breaker.
Location in commercial center. Few meters far from Macy’s, pharmacies, park, etc. friendly staff, decent cleaning and confort.

Some of the sheets didn't seem so clean and the floor felt just a little dirty. But nothing major! I understand hundreds of people come through these doors.
It was placed perfectly at what seemed like the heart of San Francisco. I went around Christmas and it was wonderfully decorated outside.

Firstly the smell was terrible, like something died there, Whole corridors and room smelled Secondly, the room was super small i can’t even open my luggage Thirdly, poor facilities We moved to nearby hotel Vintage which is cheaper and better it’s also old but everything is super clean and room is very BIG and no smell!!!!

The AC in both rooms were not working, it is quite cold IN the late Dec~ but they gave us the blankets which help a lot~

Room was very dated and small. There was a very loud workers’ rights protest happening across the street that made it unpleasant to come and go from the hotel. In the end, the cacophony was unbearable and we moved to another hotel.
