Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

AustraliaThere were no family rooms for us, just choosing between a king sized bedroom and 2 king single room. They didn’t offer room service, we had to go into the restaurant/bar to collect our food so having to wakeup my kids and not leave them alone in the room to go out and get our food orders - just a little inconvenient.
The pool & dining area was nice. Laundry service was great, they washed and dried our clothes and even folded it. Appreciate that! Super convenient.

New ZealandOne thing that did NOT sit right with me was the fact that one of the F&B attendants had come up to me to ask for my room number & during mid-conversation she had walked off. Her attitude towards me was disrespectful and that was uncalled for. I suggest she gets a little more training done for manners. Disappointed. I am extremely happy with every other staff member that took care of us , especially the 2 lovely receptionists that checked us in. They were amazing as well as the lovely gentleman who served us with welcome drinks. Else, everything was okay.
Breakfast was amazing. So many good options to choose from.

New ZealandCockroaches! But it is to be expected in that part of Samoa, lots of eateries, hotels, people, so they are everywhere! But better management and care should be taken to make sure the rooms become free from cockroaches!!
Nice, modern, great atmosphere! Rooms are small but comfortable and solid foundation! Lived there is an atm, elevator, great bar and pool and food was ok! Lots of car parking and good aircon!

New ZealandSome more lactose free, gluten free options would have been good. Also utilising more Samoan ingredients in the Dinner menu.
The staff are wonderful and friendly, there were a number who stood out over our short stay. We were welcomed as if into their home. The buffet breakfast was good, a mixture of foods - we were pleased to see the koko laisa (cocoa rice) which was delicious. A good selection of fruits.

The Complementary Breakfast great and at a reasonable time. They added different food and drinks everyday which was a nice surprise. I liked also how you could chrome cast onto the TV it was really great especially because the reception for live TV wasn't always reliable.

New ZealandUnfortunately I was disappointed with the lack of cleanliness, in particular the dining area, tables were sticky, placemats had food stuck to them, cutlery was dirty, the seating coverings were absolutely filthy. When clearing tables the staff simply brushed the crumbs off with a green cloth, there was no use of spray of any kind. Ordered dinner one night, waited over an hour for a dry steak, ordered jus, got a gelatinous weird mix of something, burger was missing half the ingredients. Room 307 was okay, different staff cleaned it or not at all differently each time. Bathroom had some strange brown spots on the wall next to the toilet on arrival, the floor was sticky, food stains on the bed runner and cushions, curtain was broken.
Ingrid from the Lava Hotel was super helpful with my last minute reservation requests. The shuttle driver who picked us up from the airport and dropped us off arranged a rental car for us on arrival, he made some calls and within an hour of arriving at the hotel a car was dropped off. Location is excellent, close to town. Bed and pillows were perfectly comfortable. Most of the staff were friendly, a guy who greeted us outside each night was lovely. They had a band play one night which was nice to listen too. Enjoyed the breakfast especially the tiny apples which were nice and crunchy. Shower pressure was good.

New ZealandPrices of meals a bit steep and needed more options, need more local dishes (eg. palusami and talo, fresh oka, and/or umu cooked type food); did not have enough food choices on Fiafia night, offer Buffet if you advertised it, also kids were not impressed when pizza ran out so had to have 4 burgers(no salad) which were not worth it. Other tables had pizza and burgers etc. At check-in it would be helpful to have a total cost of rooms booked, and break down too, to match with online booking costs made (so the two can be matched),helps with transparency and difference with currency changes etc. Maybe having available some info booklets (hard copies not digital) about the history of Lava Hotel, where it gets its name etc. Also, with some information about tourist spots and how to get there, costs etc. Maybe in future Lava Hotel could offer guided tours around places in Upolu.
Breakfast every morning was fantastic; especially when they had Samoan dishes like poi. Having esi (pawpaw) and misiluki fa'i (mini bananas) every day was a must. The Barista coffees were so good; the guys made perfect lattes and flat whites. The vai tipolo was also the most refreshing and delicious non alcoholic drink ever! Staff were generally very friendly and helpful, never rude. Paris at front house reception and check-in was a wonderful, warm and pleasant person to meet and work with. She was always calm and non-threatening, very patient when we had to discuss financial matters. She was by far the best staff member there. The other staff were good too, but Paris gave us the best first impression of Lava and its vibe for our family. Thanks staff at Lava Hotel. The pool, wow! - my boys loved it! Nice to just relax on pool chairs too (non swimmers). The meals were nice, but there is room for improvement and more variety (especially for the price ranges). Including more local dishes would be a good change, ie. palusami and talo, etc. The Thursday night Fiafia night was ok but hard to really appreciate with the layout and depending where you were sitting/standing. Although the siva afi was pretty amazing. Buffet meal was not offered on that Fiafia night, and they ran out of pizza so need to work on that please. One of the biggest highlights of Lava Hotel is the hotel itself. The architecture, the whole structure of the building and its environment is quite unique. The flow from indoors to outdoors areas is very inviting and amazing when you first walk in. It is very relaxing to sit in any of the seated areas available too. Exploring the 3 levels is awesome, the views from the top are breath-taking. Wheelchair accessibility at Lava Hotel is perfect; bathroom facilities and just getting around was easy, staff so kind and helpful too. We definitely recommend Lava for wheelchair users and/or people with mobility issues.

Australiavery small dislike were the rooms being tight for 2 adults and 1 toddler (3.5year old) plus 3 large suitcases. However, we were out most days so this wasn’t a major issue for us.
Great location, staff were very accommodating and helpful. We arrived at approx. 9am all jet lagged and was able to check in early with a small charge. The staff were super helpful with getting us checked in early. We were on the ground floor right next to the bar/restaurant and had no issues with noise. We were out most of the stay so it was great to have a cool and clean place to sleep in. Amenities changed daily. Relaxing pool area.

AustraliaA tourist information book located inside the room would be great. This would help with planning your day. At this time, guests must ask many detailed questions at the reception desk.
