Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

AustraliaStaff were a bit rude , I rang a few times for laundry service, and they didn't bother to get bk to me after I called and enquired about it 3 times.
The lobby is nice, and it is a good place to have a few drinks at night. Lamb shanks were great.

United StatesRoom smelled like cigarette smoke, fire alarm went off about 11 pm and nobody seemed to know what was happening, nothing was said to the guests waiting outside. Air conditioner was not controllable and stopped working after the fire alarm went off, so no AC during the night. No clear explanation for included breakfast in the morning. Not up to par with other hotels we visited in Samoa for the price. Wouldn't recommend to others visiting.
Location and staff were great!

AustraliaIt would be awesome if the toilet space was a bit larger just to allow for more leg room. The other thing was with the Air Conditioning, it wouldn't allow us to change the temperature. It was locked. It probably could have easily been fixed if we asked but we were outdoors most times but was just one thing we wish we had control over.
Service was exceptional! Everything exceeded our expectations and more. We had an early arrival & because they were fully booked out (probs due to the rugby tournament etc) they weren't able to cater for an early check in so we still had to wait till around 1:30pm but we were fine as that gave us time to explore town more & just chill in the relaxing lobby of the hotel. From the start the gentlemen who checked us in also helped us set up our local sim card & made sure we got the best deal data and text wise. Also not too long after we checked into our room the staff knocked on our door and dropped off a plate of tropical fruit which we really appreciated. We had the ground floor room which meant we heard the live entertainment each night which we didn't mind because the talent they have perform is just amazing. We had a pretty packed schedule for the short amount of time we were there so the fact that brekky was included in our package made it more convenient. We very much enjoyed eating at the 1905 Lava Hotel restaurant not only for brekky but also for dinner. The open floor plan in the restaurant just adds to the ambience of the island vibe which makes it very relaxing to wind down and enjoy the food while taking in the cool breeze that wanders in. The staff were nothing but helpful in serving us out food always with a smile on their faces. They also offer a laundry service which we took advantage of so it was less laundry to do when we got back home. Overall, we would highly recommend anyone who is looking for a short or long stay as not only are the facilities great but the staff and vibes of the place are spectacular. To top it off, they are conveniently located within walking distance to town (Maccas, Cinemas, Markets etc). Big faafetai to the staff at Lava Hotel we will be back again.

New ZealandThe service that was provided to us and the loud locals that stays in the late hours of the night. Our first day/night, the power kept going off. The food and the drinks were overly priced. The atmosphere/vibe was not good at all. The worse hotel I have stayed at. The gym was a joke as it was just outside our room in the lobby, and the gym equipment didn't look safe to use. Such a small space.

New ZealandThe TV was useless it ran in a computer system and with bad weather the picture was really bad. Several times I was told they would fix it but apart from finally connecting it to the computer system nothing seemed to happen
Breakfast was ok once you got the staff to explain the menu. Had to scan to see it and as wifi was dodgy we couldn’t scan. The rooms were very comfortable and the cleaners were good but there seemed to be a few plus they were washing and drying towels and giving them back. Our rooms were quiet.

New ZealandElevator broke down for a day, maybe have a backup one in the future.
The place was more for business guests and was not so much for family on vacation but they made sure they accommodated for us and our stay and we had the best time. The staff were so lovely and friendly.

New ZealandThe breakfast was less than adequate. Medium hot drink two slices of cold toast jam and some cut up fruit pieces. That was the Continental breakfast included in price, more food off the menu cost. We had a shuttle collect us from the airport as arranged by the hotel it cost more than double the price of a taxi.
The rooms were comfortable seemed to be a lot of staff in and out of our rooms. The door was not always closed as we had left it.

New ZealandI requested a quiet room but we were on the ground floor so we got all the noise from the lobby and restaurant - it felt as if we had the party in our room and we couldn't get away from it. Unfortunately, the designer of the hotel didn't take advantage of the lovely coastal views so we looked out onto the grubby building next door. Children were allowed to run through the hotel corridors and stairwell unchecked - many were jumping on the furniture in the lobby as if it was a trampoline. Swimming pool was commandeered by families having children's birthday parties. One of our children got a large cut on their leg (it required stitches) from a broken tile in the pool. The pool was in the shadow of the building all afternoon so didn't warm up.
Rooms were new and fresh. Beds and bedding very comfortable. Located within walking distance to Apia township.

New ZealandMenu was quite limited. Ran out of key menu items and this didn’t get fixed until our last day. Often left waiting for 30-40 minutes before being served at the restaurant. Room got tidied but we didn’t get key items replaced such as body wash, soap and towels. More pool loungers were needed. Pool maintenance seemed to be not up to par. Pool got quite murky near the end of the trip.
Location was very central. The bed was very comfortable and the room was big enough for the two of us. The pool was great!

New ZealandThe elevator didn't work on several occasions, so had to walk up/down the stairs a few times. The receptionist that tried to check us in, tried to rip me off by charging me extra and purposely made the eftpos machine not work so I could pay cash stating that there were extra costs on top of what I was quoted on Booking.com. Luckily, he allowed us to go take our bags up to our rooms and when I came back down to pay at a later time, a new receptionist was there who was able to work the eftpos machine properly and when asked why the previous reception was trying to charge me extra, she brushed it off like it was a normal occurrence. Please be careful of being scammed. It's not all people, but one person ruins it for everyone else.
Had a lovely stay. The bed was very comfy and really appreciated the included breakfast. Overall, our room, staff and atmosphere of the hotel was great. Would definitely stay again and recommend to others.

AustraliaEverything was soiled as when we got there, the day we were supposed to check in, the hotel had no availabilities. Alternative arrangements had to be made. This is unacceptable and is the worst thing that could happen coming from overseas. Do better.

New ZealandRoom had a leak in which a person came to our room at 9pm to fix who we sent away. We later found out we were put in the wrong room by reception. Most of the service staff were rude and unskilled especially the Reception Manager. Towels were not given until 5pm after asking in the morning Given it’s a new hotel we tried to be patient with how rude the majority of the staff were but it got out of hand that we had a sit down with Donna at the end of the stay.
The room was beautiful how ever had a leak. The location of the Hotel Location was convenient. Donna, The night security and the Breakfast Manager were amazing!

AustraliaRoom service was not great...for 2 days in a row we were only supplied with 1 towel for 2 people. The rubbish bin in the room was emptied on second day but a new liner was not put in for the remainder of stay. Rubbish bin in bathroom was not emptied. We returned to our room at around 3pm one day and found housekeeping still doing the room but it seems that she had just used our toilet and a terrible odour was still in the room. Waitstaff was not transparent about what was included in complimentary breakfast which resulted in an unexpected charge. Other issue was a charge for food to our room that we did not order, this was eventually rectified but frustrating to discover. Bathroom very small with a larger person perhaps finding it difficult to use toilet comfortably. We were only supplied with 1 access card and when we asked for another we were told it was a $50 tala fee for the second one however it very clearly states on the information channel on the TV that 2 access cards would be supplied upon check in. We usually stay at a different hotel close by but thought we would give Lava a go...we won't be back though sadly.
Location was very good as within walking distance to Apia. Lovely pool although no shade at all around it...needs umbrellas and lounges. Comfortable bed, plenty of hanging and wardrobe space. Plenty of parking around the back. Chromecast TV was a nice addition. Gym facilities were pretty good. Lunch and dinner menu was good but breakfast wasn't the greatest.
