Very friendly atmosphere with a wonderful host. I was only there for a few days but it felt like home from the day I arrived. Rooms/beds were also nice and spacious.

I thought this Boken Kazoku was a charming and wonderful place to stay. It is quite an old building and I really liked the traditional aspects of staying here. I liked the timber construction and the way the windows from my room framed views of Mt Yōtei. I enjoyed making my bed and found the Tatami mat to be pretty comfortable, once I'd figured it out. I liked taking your shoes off at the front door and using the slippers provided while inside.
I liked the restaurant and the food they served at both breakfast and dinner, to me it felt very traditionally Japanese and was very tasty. They offer drinks and snacks to buy as well, which was more than helpful when I and some of the other guests needed some late at night and we didn't want to go out.
A potential downside is its location, however the staff offer transfers to and from the mountain everyday and they even picked me up from the train station when I arrived. There is also a bus stop that can take you to Kutchan, but it only runs at certain times.
Some have said it can be a little cold and while that is true, the heater in my room was more than enough and I did find myself getting a bit too hot at times.
From everything, Boken Kazoku offers a quaint and relaxed experience that felt traditionally Japanese and accessible enough for me as someone who doesn't speak Japanese. I stayed in a couple of places while in Japan and of all of them, I wish I had stayed longer here.

I was travelling over 2 weeks, skiing in the day and working in the evening thanks to the 9 hour time difference.
The location is a 5 minute walk to the bus stop to get up to the Grand Hirafu Welcome centre and the Ace Gondola so close enough to everything you need, but in a quiet side street.
Facilities are excellent, including the washer dryer, this is the first ski trip I am not taking home dirty laundry!
The room was excellent, clean and comfortable, and once I had got used to the Japanese heating systems in the property I had a very comfortable stay.
Kutchan has some great bars and restuarants, and the prices are much better than in the main resorts of Niseko.

The host is nice! The room is spacious enough. The kitchen and common area is nice. It is near the ski resort! Free parking is nice!
Budget travellers know that there is no better way to make the most of their trip than by staying at a hostel: save money for exploring during the day, and swap stories with fellow backpackers in the shared kitchen or bar in the evening. Dorm-style bedrooms with shared bathrooms are standard hostel fare, but private rooms are also available for those willing to pay a bit more.
The hotel was spotlessly clean, amazing cleaning staff. Great buffet breakfast, though pretty much identical every day. Great location next to Max Value (supermarket) and Daiso. Appreciated the in-room humidifier. Wonderful shuttle to and from the mountain. This is one of the few remaining affordable accommodation options in Niseko. Having first come in 2005, every trip I end up staying further and further out. However, as Niseko has westernised over the years, I much prefer the charm and real Japaneseness of Kutchan.
The premises is a hostel that caters for skiers during Winter. We had the tatami beds in a private room and if we can cope aged 57 and 60 anybody can!
It was the cheapest we could find but we enjoyed, aside from the cold showers, but it was cheap in comparison 😀
Great location if you want to travel to more than just niseko as long as you have a car.
Super clean and central in Kutchan for all the restaurants and night life.
Be prepared that the rooms are very tight, especially with snowboard bags and luggage but as long as you set it up so that everything goes back in its place it’s a great little room.
We’ll be back next time we’re in Hokkaido!
I guess I didn’t read the description but it’s a really cool property, it’s an old school turned into a hostel. The owners were extremely nice and communicated everything well. There a bus stop for both directions at the entrance making it very accessible to either town. When I got hurt and had to go to the hospital the grandma at the property who used to be a nurse helped re bandage my ankle after the hospital didn’t do a good job and everyone checked on me every day. It was really sweet.
The location and the staff were absolutely superb. I would absolutely stay there again if I return to Niseko. Very welcoming and warm family who run the place which felt more like a hotel than a hostel. Excellent value for money.
The house is beautiful and cosy feeling and Ryo keeps the whole place super clean and well maintained. The beds were comfy and rooms were well heated. Kitchen was sufficiently equipped with all you need.
The location was good, near to the JR Kutchan station, a supermarket and a 7-11. Ryo also provides daily morning shuttle to Hirafu, which is highly appreciated.
Most remarkably Ryo is a friendly and helpful host, and a wonderful cook too :)
This is one of the best hostel we have stayed in!
