Lovely hotel in the old Sassi area of matera. My room was in one of the old caves, a cool experience. Giant tub, nice shower. Good pillows and bedding. Loads of good restaurants nearby. Staff was extremely helpful in giving directions, pointing out sights that would not be on my tour, recommending restaurants, and chatting while I practiced my Italian. Breakfast was excellent as well.

Very special experience to stay in a Sassi room. You can enjoy wonderful view from your room as well as from the hotel terrace. Nice breakfast with a lot of local products.

The breakfast was quite exceptional for its great range and high quality. Lovely breakfast room. Loved the Cave room where we lived for 3 nights. Outside on the communal terrace area we had a fantastic view of Matera's buildings, lit up at night. Very pleasant staff.

The room was fashioned from a Sassi cave - so in a word - Incredible! Staff was superb, everything was clean and well appropriated. Breakfast buffet was beautiful, delicious and staff checked on us regularly. The whole Matera experience was nothing short of magical - I can't recommend it and Fra Sassi Residence highly enough. We definitely plan on returning and you can't get a dinner anywhere in the world better than at Pasta y Pomodoro - that pasta is the best in the world.

There were two single beds pushed together instead of a queen sized bed. For the price we paid, we would expect a basic comfort such as a queen sized bed. Room can get stuffy if you do not open the doors. We did not have any windos to air out the room.

The location was phenomenal and we could find free parking nearby above the Sassi area. The view from the hotel was exceptional. The staff were communicative and kind enough to let me use their conference room for a 7am work call. The room was comfortable but felt a bit dated with some minor cracks and holes in the wall. There was a fridge with free sparking and still water which was replenished at the end of the day; as well as a kettle with tea instant coffee. The breakfast was absolutely brilliant with a wide range of savoury and sweet food including but not limited to: fried eggs, boiled eggs, assorted cold cut meats, hard cheese, soft cheese, foccacia, waffles, packaged toast, jam, croissants, fruit, cereal, bruschetta, yoghurt, made to order coffee and hot chocolate and juice. Cannot get over the breakfast view!

Very unusual hotel carved into the rocks. Car parking was remote in the city but if you can just keep to an overnight bag or haversack, its quite walkable from the car park to the hotel. Staff treated us to some proseco when they found out it was a birthday booking. Good breakfast spread

I cannot begin to tell you how grateful we were to all the staff here. They went above and beyond in helping us with our stay. Matera is an extraordinary place and Fra I Sassi’s location fantastic.

Location of hotel is right in the centre of Sassi. Staff very friendly. The breakfast was amazing with a great selection of food, probably one of the best I have had in an Italian Hotel. Aperitivo in the evening came with so much stuzzuchini (nibbles served with your drink) that we had to push out our dinner booking by an hour :-). Highly recommend this hotel!

This place is perfectly placed for a scenic and special get-away. City square, restaurants and nature hike all within close proximity. The staff was accommodating and attentive. The room was spacious and clean with modern amenities. We loved it!

Really nothing could've been improved, our stay was wonderful in every way.

Beautiful location right in the heart of Matera. Easy to walk to shops/restaurants/city square. The front desk staff was incredibly kind and helpful to recommend restaurants, and even booked us a reservation. The room was very clean and well-kept. Breakfast was well done and included cuisine from multiple countries.

The room didn't have a window, was quite hot and humid. I think that reception staff should have better control of messages - I got 3 with question about arrival time. Actually they don't need exact time as there is always somebody at the reception desk until 8 pm. Our room wasn't ready at the check in time.

This place has it all. Stay in a cave but also have a window and a view. We stayed in room 11 which is one of the cave suites. We had our own terrace and amazing view. Staff couldn’t be nicer. So lovely. And the breakfast!!! Amazing !!! Perfect location to visit restaurants etc and walk to everything. Would stay again.

The location is absolutely amazing, in the heart of old Matera, with a beautiful view on the old city and cathedral. The room is very unique, adopted former caves but very comfortable and nicely furnitured. The staff is very responsive and helpful. We loved breakfasts, very fresh and local food. I can say, the best breakfasts that we have experienced in Italy. We recommend to stay there and feel the unique atmosphere and climate of Matera. We will come back!
